Evangeline
My eyes flew open and I instantly sat up straight. That was a mistake. I was dizzy and I felt like I was falling but my heart was racing and my mind was swirling; trying to comprehend where I was. I couldn’t make out the shapes in front of me; I only knew that I was in a white room. As I tried to ease myself back onto the bed I felt a pair of small hands on my back supporting my weight. I looked to my right to see a blurry outline of a young woman.
“That’s it Evangeline.” I felt my back make contact with the warm cushiony bed. “You shouldn’t have sat up like that, especially after your ordeal.” The woman to my right, who I assumed was my nurse, said. Ordeal? Then in the blink of an eye everything came back to me. The blade, the blood, the phone call. I sighed when I thought about the phone call. I turned to my left. I looked at the emptiness and felt a tear roll down my cheek. I expected him to be there. I expected him to be there, looking at me with those beautiful green eyes, taking my face in his hands and kissing me. I expected him to be there kissing me the way he did when we first kissed. But I was met with the cold dark reality of his absence.
“How did I get here?” I asked, not turning towards the woman.
“Well I was told a 911 call came in from a young man saying his girlfriend had cut herself. The operator was told where you lived but that’s all he got out of the kid.” I turned my head to look at her. The tears had obscured my vision but other than that I think my vision was returning to normal. The nurse must have seen the desperation in my eyes. Was she lying? Was it a mistake?
“Wait here. I’ll be right back.” She put down the blanket she was folding and walked out of the room. While she was gone, I stared up at the white ceiling. The only thought running through my head; what had I done? When I heard the door open, I looked expecting to see the nurse but instead I was greeted by my aunt and Mr. Springfield.
“Aunty?” I said. I didn’t mean to sound so weak, so childish but as I called her, I did feel small and childish.
“Oh Eve.” She practically threw her purse on the ground and walked quickly up to my bed. Gently, she embraced me in one of her famous warm hugs. There were no words between us. All there was was understanding. She understood why I had done what I did and I understood that she didn’t blame me. We hugged for a bit longer, before a faint cough could be heard from the door way. My aunt pulled away and we both looked towards the door. Beckett’s dad, my soon-to-be step-father, stood in the doorway looking dreadful. His hair was overgrown and he had started to grow a beard. His cloths were filthy too, but his eyes are what caught my full attention; they looked so empty and sad.
“Hi Mr. Springfield.” I said, not being able to look him in the eyes any longer.
“Hello Evangeline and please, call me Rick.” He said. When I peeked up at him I saw that he was admiring the floor. I sat there and waited for a ‘How are you?’ or ‘Why did you do it?’ but I got nothing.
“Evangeline, Rick needs ta ask you somethin’ very important.” I looked over at Aunt Cecilia and watched as she looked nervously at Rick. He was looking at her but I couldn’t see much emotion in his eyes. Sluggishly, he walked over to my bed, pulled over a chair and sat down. It was quiet for a couple of minutes, then he cleared his throat and began to speak.
“Eve, Beckett has gone missing and I was wondering if you knew where he was.” My body froze. Gone missing?
“When did he go missing?” I asked staring at my bed sheets.
“I talked to Sheriff Bronson an’ he said that so far the last place Beckett was seen was at our house, when he called 911.” My aunt took my hand and held it tight. She was about to say something else but was interrupted by a familiar voice.
“Did this boy have black hair and green eyes?” All three of us turned towards the doorway. There stood the nurse that was previously in my room.
“ Yes, do you know where he is?” Rick had jumped out of his seat and had grabbed the nurse’s shoulder. She looked frightened but coolly slipped past him and walked towards me.
“I don’t know where he is but he told me to give you this.” She reached into the little pocket on her shirt and pulled out a necklace, my necklace. She softly placed it in my hand. “He told me to tell you that he loved you and he was ‘doing this for you’. I don’t really know what the last part is supposed to mean. But I did see him walk out of the hospital with a weird looking girl.” Rick’s head shot up faster than lightning when she finished her sentence.
“Did this girl have half her head shaved off and piercings all over the place?” He asked. The woman nodded her head.
“Sarah.” The girl’s name slipped off his lips. Rick took his head in his hands and sighed loudly.
“Who’s Sarah?” I asked. I didn’t know the girl but I somehow felt betrayed. Had Beckett gone somewhere with her? He said he was going to find a way out of our ‘situation’ but had me trying to kill myself made him give up? So many questions crossed my mind and my head started to spin. I laid down, not being able to sit up any longer.
“We’ll tell ya after sweetheart. Right now, ya need ta rest.” I was about to protest but I had suddenly become rather drowsy. I looked over to my right and saw that the nurse had inserted a needle into my IV tube. Then I slowly began to drift off into the darkness once again.
