(Joey's POV)
I never thought this day would come. Today, I am proposing to my boyfriend of eight years. I know people expect Daniel to propose, but I like to go against expectation. I'm not going to do a cliche romantic scavenger hunt or set up something at our house. Instead, I'm going to enlist a few of my friends to help. My friends are going to help me set up something at the same place we went camping. "How do you want us to put the candles?" "Around the firepit, make sure they're not too close to the other trees." Nikita and Gabbie nod, setting the small candles in a shape of a heart around the not-lit firepit. "When is Daniel coming?" "I have to go pick him up, I'm not bringing him until sunset so let's hope no one messes this up." Gabbie and Nikita hug me before we leave the setup behind.
Daniel was waiting for me on the front porch, his head in his hands. "Are you okay Danny?" He looks at me and I gasp, his eyes are so sunken and there are dark circles under his eyes. "Where have you been?" "I've been setting something up, I told you." Daniel shakes his head "you've been out with apparent 'friends' for almost three days. What am I supposed to think?" I couldn't believe it, does he think I'm...no. Oh no. "Daniel...you don't think I'm cheating on you do you?" He hesitates with his answer and I crumble, sitting beside him on the step. I bury my head against him, shaking harshly. "No, no, no. I would never. Danny no, I never would do that to you. You're all I want, you're everything. No one out there is better for me, I love you."
Looking over at me, Daniel wraps an arm around my shaking shoulder "I'm sorry. You've just been absent a lot lately, I mean, you're not there when I wake up or when I go to sleep. I just thought..." "no, no. Never." Kissing his head, we enter the house. Daniel pulls me to the couch "you are going to make up for missing cuddle time." I kiss his cheek, nuzzling my nose against his neck. "I'm taking you out tonight" Daniel squirms "tonight is not now, now we cuddle." I thought back to what I have set up in the forest, I'm starting to worry. What if it's early? Eight years might be a long time to some, but to me, it seems like it's too soon. "Hey Daniel," I ask, switching positions so he's the little spoon. "Yeah?" I start brushing my fingers through his hair calmly "do you see a future with me?"
"Of course I do! We've been together for a long time now, how can I not see a future with you? You're my everything, just like I'm your everything. I can already picture our future family." He looks up at me, a huge smile on his face "I love you."
(Later in the Evening)
The sun is about to set. I need to get Daniel to the forest. Right now, Daniel is asleep in my arms. Picking him up, I feel him squirm in my grasp. Quietly shushing the whine escaping Daniel's lips, I place him in the car. My palms are sweating, my heart is beating like a drum. I was repeating my speech under my breath, the ring box burning a hole in my pocket. I see Gabbie's car between the trees, slightly hidden. Before getting Daniel, I meet Gabbie at her car. "The fire is lit, the candles are burning. Instead of rose petals, I made a line of candles leading the way. I'll get Daniel out of the car, you just go to your beautiful setup." Thanking her, I follow the small candle path to the burning fire. Inside a tent, I found three bouquets of roses with a note attached. 'Put twenty-four of the roses around the fire and keep the other twelve to give to Daniel. You're welcome and I wish you two the best! ~ G.H'
"Joey?" I turn to see Daniel looking at me with wide watery eyes "what is this?" Taking his hands, I kiss his nose "this is for you. Come sit" he smiles and follows me. We sit on a log across from the fire, Daniel's head resting on my shoulder. "It isn't even our anniversary! Why did you set this up?" Standing, I take the ring box out of my pocket and get down on one knee in front of the fire. Daniel gasps and smacks a hand over his mouth "J-Joey" I hold up a finger.
"Daniel, we've been together for so long now and I've been panicking over when the right time would be. I've never dreamt of ever leaving you, I never would. Why would I leave the one person who I want to be mine for the rest of our days? You're my person, you're my one true love. I never thought I'd meet the one person who would change my life when I was only in high school. You've been like my rock, I know that I can come to you with anything just like you can come to me for anything. I love you so much Daniel, I don't think I'll ever be able to express it to you without my speech lasting hours upon hours. I'll make it simple. Daniel, ever since I first saw you, it was as if an angel fell down from the sky. You, to me, are an angel. You're my light in the darkness. I'm so lucky to have you, I never want to let you go." I open the ring box "will you marry me?"
Tears were fleeting down Daniel's cheeks as he slowly lifts his head to nod. "Yes! Absolutely yes!" Sliding the ring onto his finger, Daniel pulls me up and kisses me. "I love you, I love you so much." "I love you more, don't doubt for a second that I don't. I'm yours forever now, you can't get rid of me now" he smiles "like I'd ever."
Laying by the fire, Daniel brushes his fingers through my hair as he whispers words of love into my ear. Both of us were smiling ear to ear, just enjoying our time. Our new lives as fiancees.
