(Joey's POV)
I understand that Daniel is an outdoors kind of person, that's one of the many things I love about him. But he's been gone for close to a month with friends. And when he's home, he still feels like he's away. Every conversation we have sooner or later leads to him talking about his next trip. It's infuriating sometimes. All I want to do is be with my boyfriend and not worry about him going to Montana or Washington state the next day. I've been trying to distract myself with our friends but even they ask where Daniel is.
"How are you doing Joey? The house hasn't burned down in my absence has it?" I chuckle humorlessly, shaking my head "no, don't worry. Everything is in one piece." His facial expressions shift "are you okay?" "Never better." Daniel goes to ask another question but is cut off by Hope barging into the room "come on, Daniel. Lizzie is waiting for us outside! You can talk to loverboy after dinner." Daniel frowns, glancing back at me then over to Hope. "Just give me five minutes then I'll be --" I hang up before he can finish his sentence. The last thing I need is for Daniel to come home and complain to me that I ruined his trip.
Daniel continued to call me every two hours, leaving voicemails and incessant texts asking if I'm okay. But I knew that there'd be a message saying his trip was extended. And I was right. "Hope just told me we're leaving for Boston tomorrow night with Lizzie, I'll send you tons of photos with Luna! I miss you!" I roll my eyes at the text. I highly doubt he misses me, he's probably saying that just in case someone is looking over his shoulder. If he really did miss me, he'd take advantage of the time he's with me, instead of wasting it on talking about his next adventure and how excited he is to be going. It's all fake, it's all bullshit. And it's all 100% hurtful.
"Joey? Are you okay? You've seemed a bit off recently" Maria sits beside me, Shadow hopping on her lap. "Do you miss Daniel? Is that it?" I shrug, burrowing my head against Wolf's back "yeah. But shouldn't I be used to him going on long trips by now? We've been together for five years, we have both been absent at times. But it feels like we have barely spent any time together when we're home. This house doesn't feel like ours anymore. Daniel treats this place as an Airbnb, he's here one day and gone the next. When he says he misses me, I feel like he doesn't. All the distractions in the world couldn't keep me from missing him, but it feels like the tiniest distraction keeps him from answering his phone. I'm sick and tired of being nothing more to him than just a guy who's keeping his home occupied. I'm now just a roommate to him, not even a boyfriend."
Maria sits there, mouth agape. "I didn't know you felt that way, you should tell him. Daniel may be snippy at times but he's a very understanding person." Is he? "I've tried, but he just brushes me off and calls me dramatic or says I'm blowing this all out of proportion. And yeah, maybe he's right. But only because I don't know how to put it without sounding like a child." Maria looks down at her phone and I sigh "let me guess, you were recording this whole time." She shrugs "not the whole time, I kinda started halfway through. I thought he should hear this." "Wait what?" She hands me the phone and sure enough, she had Daniel on FaceTime,
"Oh, Joey. I'm so sorry. I'm catching the first flight out of Boston. I promise you, when I get home I'm gonna spoil you rotten! We'll go to Malibu and spend the weekend together! Hell, we'll go back to Cabo together! Anything you want!" I roll my eyes "you don't get it do you? I don't want to go on any vacations, I don't want to be anywhere else but here with you. But you're so eager to get the fuck out of here, it's like you want to move out! I'm starting to think all of the times you joked about moving to Montana, you were serious." He sighs "maybe this conversation should be held offline, I promise you, Joey. I'll be home in the morning!" Another eye roll "sure you will. I'll believe it when I see it." I press end call before he could say anything else. "Thanks for trying to help, Maria. I'm just gonna go upstairs to the movie room."
