Chapter 1

(Katie): It's Monday. Ugh. I'm warming up at gym, and to add to the horribleness of this Monday morning, my best friend Annie isn't here yet. Which is weird, because shes usually here early. I thought she would have told me if she were sick. Whatever, I have to deal with Monday all by myself I guess. I decide to get some water and jog over to the fountain. As I'm leaning over to get water, I hear a little shriek erupt from the front room. I freeze, that was coach Mary. Hysterical crying comes next. Oh my god, what's going on?! I dash into the front room to see her curled up and shaking uncontrollably. My mind's racing what do I do?! I see the phone lying adjacent on the ground and scoop it up. "Hello?" I question into the speaker. "Is that Katie?!" It's Mr. Billy's voice. "Yeah. What's going on?!" I begin to get nervous. What could have he said that made coach Mary react in such a way? I press the phone tighter against my ear waiting for his response. He's crying too! This is bad. "Mr. Billy, what happened?!" I'm practically shouting into the phone now. My heart is beating a mile a minute. There's something wrong here. There has to be. The phone hangs up and starts beeping. What?! No. I turn to coach Mary and start shaking her. "Is there an emergency?!" I demand of her. She veers her eyes upward for a second then continues balling. I take the gym phone and speedily dial my mom's cell phone. It rings, and as it does I hear the door burst open, smacking against the wall. In walks my mother with a bright red face and tears in her eyes. Oh my god, what's happening? She doesn't say anything just grabs me by the hand and drags me out the door. "Mom?" I manage, my voice cracking mid word. I blink back tears. I'm not entirely sure what's happening, but none of those people were crying out of joy. "Katie, sweetheart," my mom stops me in front of our minivan. "Just tell me!" I shout at her, the tension killing me. She bows her head. "It's not that easy..." "Yes it is!" I insist, squeezing her hand which is webbed with mine. "Mom!" Her shoulders start to shake just like coach Mary's did. "Fine. Annie commuted suicide
in the middle of last night. She's dead."
