Emma was sitting in her room when David called her name. The girl put her book aside and made her way downstairs.
David smiled at her and pointed to the couch as he said, "Sit down, Emma. We have to talk about something "
Emma smiled back confused and sat down. "Am I in trouble? Did I do something wrong? "She asked uncertainly.
David shook his head and sat down next to Emma.
"You have an appointment at the police station this afternoon," he began, and Emma's gaze fixed on David's face, but before she could ask a question, the man continued, "Anyone who is going through the same or something similar as you, is asked to come to the police station to answer a few questions. Hopefully, they will help us find your previous foster family so that you can feel safe again, "he explained cautiously.
Emma's heart began to race and fear spread throughout her body. "What questions?" She asked uneasily.
"Unfortunately, I can not tell you that, but they should help us clarify the case," David explained.
Emma just nodded so David kept talking.
"Since I'm on duty, I'll be there too, unless you're feeling uncomfortable with me being there. If so, tell me and I'll wait in another room. "
Emma nodded again. She did not feel like she was able to speak.
"Regina was also asked to come. She is supposed to give you some comfort, but if you don't want her there, she can go to another room as well. It's completely up to you Emma"
Emma felt a little better when she learned that Regina would be there. Her eyes lifted briefly and she forced a small smile.
"Okay, thanks," she said, standing up.
"Emma, wait," David said quickly and Emma turned around again. "Everything okay?" he asked worriedly.
Emma nodded, forcing herself to smile again. When David said nothing else, the blonde disappeared back into her room.
She couldn't help but pacing nervously up and down her room for the rest of the day, imagining all the questions she'd have to answer soon.
When it was time to go, the girl heard Mary Margaret call her. Uneasily, she looked into the mirror and then went downstairs.
The ride to the police station was quiet. Again and again Mary Margaret and David looked anxiously back towards Emma. But nobody said a word.
The silence made Emma even more nervous. Her thoughts did not shut down and she wanted nothing more than to get out of the car and run to another city. But the thought of never seeing Regina ever again, made her stay.
The car came to an abrupt halt and Emma looked around nervously.
David opened the door for her and reluctantly the girl got out. The road to the building seemed longer than normally and her feet felt as heavy as concrete. But she took one step at a time and reached the door way too soon.
Once inside, the blonde was already expected.
"You have to be Emma. Nice to see you", a small, somewhat chubby man greeted her and held out his hand." I'm Officer Michael. "
Emma just nodded and shook his hand.
"You can all come with me," the policeman said, heading for a door, but before Emma could take one step, the front door opened behind them and everyone turned around.
Emma sighed in relief as she saw the brown hair of her psychologist.
Regina gave the group an apologetic smile "Sorry I'm late."
"No problem. We just wanted to start, " the policeman said and turned back around.
Emma's heart began to beat faster again. With every step the door came closer, her fear grew bigger.
That was until she felt a hand in hers. She looked up and saw Regina standing next to her. The woman squeezed the girls hand calmingly for a moment and warmth spread through Emma. The familiar tingling came back and Emma could not suppress a smile.
But quickly she was brought back to reality and clung anxiously to Regina's hand.
"Sit down, please," the policeman said, waiting for everyone to do as they were told.
Emma stiffly sat down on the sofa, her eyes on the floor. Once again, Regina squeezed her hand encouragingly.
"So Emma, we'll go over how this works, okay?" He said.
Emma nodded again and squeezed Regina's hand involuntarily. The brunette stroked her thumb gently over the back of her patient's hand.
"I'll ask you a few questions regarding to your ... situation. Take your time with the answers. I know it will be hard for you to talk about everything, so do not stress. It is very important that all questions are answered honestly.
