Chapter 11

**

Zayn ran as fast as he could, away from the beautiful boy that he had left all alone, away from the possible attraction he felt for the stranger.

He pushed open the glass doors leading to the parking lot and rushed towards the back, trying to find a safe place to hide. All of the lectures had come to an end; he had only ten minutes before the final bell rang.

His shaky hand grabbed the lighter in the left back pocket of his ripped jeans and pulled it out along with a pack of cigarettes. No one knew about his bad habit, a potential killer addiction that he couldn’t get rid of no matter what he did. Flicking the lighter on, he took a long drag from the cigarette held in his hand and sighed.

The sudden overload of emotions was something Zayn had never experienced before. The new boy was making him feel things that were foreign and unknown. He was making him feel something that Zayn didn’t believe he was capable of feeling. His definition of love equaled to something that could only bring about your destruction, something that he didn’t want to think about.

However Niall had sparked that tiny flame of hope in his heart, the bright shiny light that Zayn was trying to ignore.

‘Damn it!’ Zayn cursed and leaned against the cold wall. His mind wandered back to the blonde who had messed up his way of thinking. There was a reason for why Zayn hated the very idea of love.

He had watched his parents pretend to be in love and act like everything was alright, when it wasn’t. They had been in love once but after the first few years of marriage, when Zayn was just eight years old, everything started to fall apart. The quarrelling and the daily suspicion ruined the beautiful thing they had shared, putting it in a box and beating it up until there was nothing left.

How he wished things were different right now, how he wished there was happy family waiting for him at home instead of his broken hearted mother.

It had taken them another five years to figure out that they were done, that the marriage was over. By that time the family had drifted apart, with Zayn taking up smoking and bullying kids that annoyed him, his mother spending most of her time in the office and his dad drinking away all night. Harry was the only one who had stood by him as Zayn watched his life turn upside down.

He had been the ideal best friend to Zayn, helping him out, allowing him to crash at his place when things went south at Zayn’s house, listening to him cry until Zayn calmed down. It was one of the many reasons why Zayn took his side even though he knew he was wrong.

Deep down Zayn was aware of Harry’s kind heart and the real reason behind his hate for Louis Tomlinson. He wasn’t like this in the beginning years of their friendship, only the appearance of a certain gay had pulled out Harry’s evil side for the world to see.

As for Zayn, well the boy had discovered his different sexual preferences long time back. He only hid them for Harry’s sake and also because of the fear of becoming the outcast in school and the society. The boys in his school weren’t half as attractive as the blonde he had just met. No one had that kind of appeal, the kind of pull Zayn was looking for.

And now after hearing the tragic story of the new boy he felt his heart call out to him. The need to be with the blonde was almost painful and there was nothing he could do about it. The thought of what this could mean frightened him but at the same time it excited him as well.

To be able to touch that soft smooth skin, to be able to look into those innocent blue eyes and to be able to kiss those baby pink lips, it took all of his willpower to stop his feet from running back to Niall, from running back to the boy who had stolen his heart... Zayn Malik’s heart.

‘Niall? Are you alright?’ Louis peeked in from behind the door leading to the basketball court. He found the boy sitting on the floor, leaning against the bench, his eyes staring up at the ceiling.

‘Hey? You ok?’ he touched Niall, giving a slight push to his shoulder.

‘Huh?’ Niall jerked out of his trance, and sat up straight. He gave a small smile when Louis’ worried face looming over his head.

‘Come on…the classes ended half an hour ago.’ Louis took hold of Niall’s hand and helped him to his feet. The boy wobbled a little but steadied himself after a few seconds. The meeting with his raven-haired bully had been quite unexpected and sudden.

Niall still couldn’t believe the things that had gone down between them. He had practically spilled all of his past life to this stranger without a second thought and he didn’t seem to regret it. Niall had never felt this way around Derek. It was refreshing, yet a bit worrying as well.

He was always on best behavior in front of Derek, taking care not to upset him or insult him in front of his friends. There was always some kind of restrictions on him, chains binding him and forcing him to act in a certain way. But it wasn’t like that with this strange guy. The boy had seemed so upset on hearing about his suicide attempt; it was something even Derek wasn’t aware of.

‘What are you smiling about?’ Louis nudged him in the ribs and Niall frowned.

He had been smiling without knowing…how strange. Did that mean something? Was the reason behind it a certain black-haired bully?

Niall didn’t want to jump to conclusions and get his hopes up just to be disappointed later on. He didn’t even know the guy yet, no name or address…nothing.

As they walked down the almost deserted corridors Louis watched his new friend as closely as possible without getting him suspicious about it. Niall seemed to extremely happy at that moment, the occasional smile playing on his face every now and then, the involuntary skipping in his steps. It was as if he had been transformed in to someone else.

Louis wanted to call him the Happy Niall right now, this version of the blonde was better than the shy version. The boy was almost bursting with feelings and joy for reasons best known to him. He didn’t want to force Niall into telling him his secret, he would let him in eventually… at least Louis hoped he did.

For now his mind was plagued by much darker things then knowing Niall’s secrets. They were about to step out into the open, away from the school campus and in an area that was ruled by Harry Styles, the bully.

Even though they had shared a hot steamy kiss in a lonely classroom, he doubted Harry would let him off because of that. Maybe it would worsen the beatings he was about to get tonight. Maybe Harry would be angrier on him than usual.

With all the possible dangers etched in his mind, Louis stepped out onto the road that would take him home and eventually meet paths with Harry.
