They reached Monteau, Zephyrine's destination. Renée couldn't ask for a lift to Paris from the guys because she was uninterested in asking a favour from them. She was still wondering about how she could manage to go to Paris when Zephyrine invited her to her house.

"Come on, Renée! You don't have anywhere to go, stay the night with us and think about it tomorrow" Zephyr said, eyes shining,

"I insist, please"

"But your grandma is sick, everybody must be worried, I can't be an unwanted guest"

Zephyr bit her lip,
"Umm, I have a confession to make" she said, looking around guiltily.
"Actually, that was just a ruse to get a ride, I needed to get back as early as possible for Easter dinner with my family. I'm really sorry"

Normally, Renée would've been shocked at such a confession, but now, all she did was raise her eyebrows. The reflex of the eyebrow raise too, was because of her sudden confession, not about it. There weren't many things in the world that could surprise her nowadays. The glassy vision of the world from her eyes had become so tainted that another splatter didn't matter. The things which would have caused her once idealistic self to question people's moral standards, had become very believable and common.

People usually referred to this acceptance as growing up or becoming mature. But Renée wasn't sure if she could call it growing up, it felt more like losing hope from life and giving up on the world. It shouldn't be a problem either way, afterall, she was going to die anyway, right?

"If that's the case, sure" Renée said, finally answering Zephyrine with a smile.
