Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass

☀︎

"Hey Bev," I yawned to my friend. A winter gust whipped, causing the tip of my nose to turn pink.

"Hi Brandy," she smiled sleepily.

I glanced over at the clock. 7:45. It was way too early to be awake and at school. Looking around, I found our other friend, April. I waved her towards Beverly and me. She walked towards us, handing her pockets and a bright smile on her face.

April's long dark curls bounced behind her as she walked, her dark eyes sparkling. The way she looked matched her personality perfectly: cute.

"Hey Brandy! Hi Bevvy! How are you guys today?" she asked, an ever going excitement in her voice.

"I'm just dandy," I answered, semi-sarcastically, "how about you?"

April smiled genuinely, "I'm alright. That kid Bill Denbrough walked with me to school today. I'm not sure why, but it was nice. You guys should really talk to him sometime, he's really sweet."

Beverly looked down, almost sad, "yeah. He is really nice, isn't he."

I knew her and Bill had a thing a while back, but then she moved away with her aunt for a couple years. When she moved back last year, she seemed to avoid Bill.

I remembered seeing him at school on the first day of eighth grade, teary-eyed. I asked him what was wrong. Bill looked up at me, "she's gone," he whispered, barely loud enough for me to hear.

His friend, Eddie Kaspbrak had looked at him, "it'll be okay, Bill. She'll come back." Bill nodded and looked down, "I know. I'll wait."

Bill hadn't dated anyone since then. He hadn't even had little flings with people. Not many people knew why, but I did. Beverly Marsh had his heart. And when she came back, she didn't talk to him. He didn't dare even look at her. Beverly always claims something about it being easier like that, but I didn't understand how not being with the one you loved could make anything easier.

I snapped back into reality, looking at Beverly, "why don't you talk to him Bevvy?"

She gulped back, "as much as I'd like to, I can't do that. The memories..." the end of her sentence faded as she zoned out.

I scoffed, "the memories my ass, Bev. I swear to God you two are so stubborn."

"It's okay, Brandy. I promise. I'm okay."

I didn't believe her, but I let it drop for now.

The bell chimed and I swung my backpack around my shoulders, "who's ready for another day in hell," I said, faux enthusiastically. April giggled and waved goodbye to us.

Beverly linked her arm in mine walking in step with me, "hell is only the destination for those who sin."

"Well then Bev, we're getting just what we deserve."

Beverly laughed at this as we ascended the stairs to go to social studies.

"To soc we go, Baby Brandy," I chuckled at her dumb nickname, "to soc we go Bevvy Boo."

We took our seats in the left back corner of the eleventh-grade classroom.

The tardy bell rang as we continued our conversation.

"So why is it again you can't talk to Bill?" I whined to Beverly.

"Brandy, you'd think I'm crazy if I told you why,"
