Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison

I stopped walking.
"Eddie, why do I even have to go? What's the point of this?"
A look of terror passed through Eddie face.
"Because. You have to go. What if she doesn't show up? What if it's a prank to make me look like an idiot? What if she brought someone else here with her to beat me u-"
I silenced Eddie, "would you rather just not go? It's your love life."
I stared up at him. He stared back, a look of longing on his face. I only wished that longing was for me.
"No," Eddie said, breaking eye contact. "I have to go."
He sounded more like he was trying to convince himself than me.
I nodded stiffly. Why would I even try? Eddie didn't want me. This has already been established. Why was I hoping he'd turn around and leave this opportunity behind?
We arrived at the park a few minutes early. Enough time to hide me.
"Here get in this bush?" Eddie pointed at a bush.
I scoffed, "did you actually think I was going to sit in a bush?"
Eddie shrugged, "uh, yeah? That was the agreement."
"Well I'm not doing that," I said with an eye roll. "I'm not that desperate to be here."
Eddie nodded. "O-okay. Then where will you go? What will you do?"
I opened up my bag, grabbing a book.
"I'll just be casually reading at a nearby table."
"That's an even better idea than the bush one!"
"I'm not surprised."
Eddie laughed, "hey that's not nice!"
I shoved him and walked away swiftly as he tried to grab me.
I smirked at him, winking, "I win."
"We'll see about that later," Eddie said with a scoff.
"Is that a challenge?" I pushed.
Eddie stared straight behind me, pushing me down onto a bench.
"Quick! She's coming!"
I grabbed my book and acted cool, turning the page.
Violet hadn't seen any of that.
She walked up to Eddie, a sparkle in her hazel eyes.
"Hey Eddie!"
Eddie smiled back at her stiffly, "hi Violet."
Violet went in to give him a hug and he accepted it.
A piece of me broke. The numb feeling returned.

I couldn't do this. I brought Brandy along, hoping her mere presence would comfort me.
But it didn't.
Violet enveloped me in a hug. I tried my best to imagine it was who I wanted to be hugging.
She sat down at a picnic table, patting for me to come sit, too.
