Take Me Home Tonight - Eddie Money

☀︎

It was the Fourth of July and the hot summer sun was beating down on us. The first month of summer had flown by as fast as ever. Bill and Beverly had been an official couple ever since the night at the quarry. None of us every really figured out what happened once they left, but we all had a hunch.

"We're all going to the fireworks show together tomorrow night, right?" Beverly asked, her hand in Bill's as we sat under a shady tree.

Everyone nodded. Except me. I remembered the promise I had made Lucas.

"I can't. Lucas asked me to go with him like a month ago."

"A month ago?" Eddie asked.

I nodded, "yeah. On the last day of school."

Eddie didn't answer.

"I'm hungry," I groaned. It was around three thirty and I hadn't eaten anything all day.

Eddie fumbled in his pocket, "I have enough money for one ice cram cone."

I nodded, "thanks Eds. I'll pay you back."

Eddie shook his head, "no you won't."

We stood up and walked towards the ice cream parlor across the street from the park.

"Yes I will!" I retorted.

"Nope. You will not pay me back for this ice cream cone."

"Well then I can't take it," I said.

Eddie smiled, "then we can share it. I'm basically paying for myself.

"Can I pay you back half?" I asked.

Eddie shook his head, his smile widening, "nope! You don't have to pay a pretty penny."

I huffed, "you're such a bitch."

"I know," Eddie replied happily.

I couldn't be angry about this. I smiled up at him.

"Hello. What can I get you two?" the ice cream man asked us.

"One strawberry waffle cone please," Eddie said.

I shook my head, "nope. You're paying for it, so we're getting your favorite. One chocolate ice cream cone."

Eddie rolled his eyes, "no! We're getting strawberry because you like strawberry more."

A memory snapped into my head.

Strawberry and chocolate go together.

"Do we have enough money for a double scoop?" I asked Eddie.

Eddie nodded, "yeah."

I took the money from his hand, handing it to the ice cream man.

"May we please have a double scoop waffle cone? One scoop strawberry and one scoop chocolate."

"Coming right up," the ice cream man said with a smile.

I turned to Eddie, "strawberry and chocolate go together."

Eddie looked down at me, recalling the distant memory.

"Strawberry and chocolate go together," he repeated.

The ice cream man handed me our cone and I thanked him, leaving the ice cream parlor to join our friends again.

I took a lick of the cone before handing it to Eddie for him to have some.
