Jesse's Girl

"Brandy!" I whirled my head around, my heart fluttering slightly at the sound of his voice.
"Oh- hey Eddie!"
I had been walking around, left alone to my not-so-peaceful thoughts. Eddie had barely left my mind.
Eddie had a hesitant look on his face, "so-uh, today," he began, "I found this letter on my porch."
He hesitantly handed me a letter, continuing to talk.
"So I went to the park like it had told me to, and this girl was there. Her name was Violet Dander. Do you know her?"
I nodded. She was sweet and little and cute. She had dark, curly hair, and a bright smile. I liked the girl. She was nice.
"What did she want?" I asked.
Eddie pointed to the letter, "read the note."
I read over the letter. I read it through a second time.
Eddie was looking back at me, as if waiting for my reaction.
I felt numb, unable to process this.
I looked back up at Eddie. There was still hope left for me.
"Do you like her?" I asked him. I prayed for an answer, but knew it wouldn't come. Violet was merely perfect. There was no way I could compete with that.
His large brown eyes look almost sad, but he quickly recovered himself.
"I-I don't know. What should I do?" he seemed like he needed this response from me.
Like it was very important that he had my blessing first.
I bit my tongue to keep myself from saying what I really thought.
I don't want you to be with her.
It wasn't until that moment when I fully accepted it to myself. Until right then, when he was about to be snatched away from me. All of his warm smiles and sarcastic comments would be adored by someone else. Someone who deserved him.
I want you to be with me.
He had Violet Dander! That was a big deal. Had they even talked? Did she even know him? I bet she only liked him because she thought he was cute.
She probably noticed his soft brown eyes and dark, barely tamed hair. His tanned skin and smooth stomach. The way he walked and how his cute little freckles covered his face.
I wanted him so bad, but Violet was better for him. A better opportunity. She was better than me, and I knew it.
She was sweet and adorable and had nice dimples and goodness I wanted to strangle her.
I gulped down a sob, nodding my head with a fake smile on my face.
"Yeah," I began, trying to appear as calm as I could.
"She's cool. I'm fine with it."
His face darkened, nodding.
"Well then," he began, "she asked me to go on a date last night, and I have no fucking clue what to do or say or wear."
I chuckled at him.
"It's okay, I'll help you out."
"Okay good. I need help."
We walked back to his house in complete silence. An awkward new tension pulsing through the air.
