At first, nothing happened in the following days after Mavis so openly threatened Hunter. He was either taking his time planning something or he had taken her seriously and didn't dare do anything against her.
But she had had no time to be happy about it, because every single day for the past few days, not once had Lilly had time to hang out with her, which had started to make Mavis quite suspicious of her friend. Lily was never really busy with everything, so her making excuses every single day seemed more of a sign of not wanting to hang out rather than really not having time to hang out.
Mavis' phone beeped again at the same time that Justin groaned in annoyance.
"You suck!" he said as he paused the game to let her check her phone.
"Oh shut up," she answered as she fished her phone out of her pocket.
It was a message from Lily, and for a moment she was almost certain she was finally going to hang out with her best friend. The last days had been really boring. She had already prepared everything for the school's start. She had bought her books, fixed all her notebooks and even cleaned her room so that she didn't need to suffer much on the first few days of school. But other than that she had only spent time with Justin and her father, which wasn't really bad but it was not what she had wanted her last days of summer to be like.
Not even her protesting gig had gathered again to organize something because many of the participants were either preparing for school, leaving town for college or having their own issues to deal with.
Mavis opened the phone and read slowly:
'Sorry, can't make it today. I and mom are visiting aunt out of town.'
Mavis didn't even waste time to just stare at the message and try to understand like she had been doing for all the other messages that she had received. She just locked the phone, put it absentmindedly on the floor and restarted the game she and Justin were already playing.
Noticing the foul mood, Justin didn't comment on anything, though Mavis could feel he was burning inside to tell his newest burn.
"Mavis, did you fix the garage?" she heard her dad soon after and Justin didn't miss a heartbeat before giving another growl, causing him to lose concentration.
"Ha ha! Sucker!" Mavis yelled as she furiously mashed all her buttons together determined to benefit from her brother's short attention span.
"Who the hell is the sucker here?!" dad appeared right outside the opened door of Justin's bedroom causing Mavis eyes to go wide and away from the screen.
Before either Mavis or her father could add more to the problem, Justin shot out of its place screaming on top of his lungs:
"I won! I did it! Mavis is the sucker!" he stepped away from their playing set up and started dancing happily around the room still singing 'Mavis is the sucker'.
Mavis looked at her brother amused while her father just shook his head disappointed at their gaming addiction.
"I already did fix the garage, cleaned the kitchen and Justin also took the garbage out and helped. We deserve some resting time dad!" she argued raising her voice above that of Justin.
Mavis' dad took a moment to see if he could come up with more chores for them to do, completely ignoring their requested resting time.
"Did you go to Mrs. Jensen to help her out?!" he asked after a while.
Almost automatically, Justin stopped dancing, turned towards his sister and said quite calmly:
"Oh Mavis, Hunter told me Mrs. Jensen wanted you to go over and help her with something."
