Mavis swam around the pool aimlessly and forcefully as if with every stroke of her arms she was silently beating up the water and taking her anger on it.

It was very humiliating to her. Not only did Hunter himself saw her as a completely unattractive person, which in itself could be okay because not everyone got attracted to everyone, but there were many other people in there that thought she was completely out of his league.

There had been once a case when her classmates got obsessed with her hair. It had been right after summer and the sun had made her hair even shinier than usual and red dots were everywhere on her skin giving it a reddish tint. Everyone was making some kind of joke with it and Hunter had been among the first ones to make fun of her.

To make it worst, the library lady had also commented on how before redheads were seen as devil's children and that she too thought it was quite an unsettling color and that she was against newer generations that thought red was nice.

"At least young girls dye their hair with that strong red or dark red, so you can tell they were not born like that." the lady had said and Mavis ended up reading about all these little girls in books that were made fun of or seen badly because their hair was different. It didn't help either that she had a small body and that her skin was quite white and never got tanned under the sun.

"How can skin even be that white anyways," had her dark-skinned math teacher commented to another teacher while giving her disapproving stares.

So Mavis saw no other choice but to go to the store, get some black dye, read the instructions and prepare the dye sloppily, cut her hair very short and dump the whole dye on it.

It had been a mess that had shocked Mrs. Jensen very much because she was the first one to see what she had done. At that time Mrs. Jensen had been nice to her and had taken her to her house, washed her hair and then accompanied her to her hairdresser to fix Mavis' mess. But for months Mavis had to keep a baseball cap on and suffer more bullying and laughs on what she had done.

That was also the only time Hunter had stopped making fun of her hair. He had been shocked and he even asked his mom if Mavis' hair would ever go back to normal.

Mavis' hair did go back to normal, and she never really cut more than the tips to avoid ever having short hair again but what she had done hadn't changed many people's opinions. There might have been more models and girls with red hair in the media, but it was still an easy way to offend Mavis whenever someone wanted.

Angrily Mavis kept swimming annoyed that she still got affected by peoples thought.

The pool was empty by now. Almost everyone had gone but Hunter, her and Alex. Apparently there had been a problem with the rent money and Alex had to be the one fixing it. Hunter somehow had been stuck helping him. And while Hunter and Alex were off fixing the problem, Mavis had been left alone in the pool.

But she liked that, she didn't mind having the pool all to herself without having to worry about anyone looking at her.

"Someone is having fun."

Mavis' heard the voice and turned around. It was Hunter and he was putting his stuff in one of the chairs.

"Someone is talking to me." Mavis' bit back not in the mood for him. Why was he even talking to her anyway?

"So, Alex told me you turned him down?"

"Why would he tell you of all the people?!" she asked exasperatedly. All she needed now was Hunter knowing everything about her personal life.

"Oh, because I befriended him of course. That's why I was helping him now too. There is no better way of dealing with people than friending them."

Mavis just glared at him and started swimming again just to ignore him.
