Mavis was happy that Hunter didn't want to speak to her, or else she didn't think she could be in the same room as him. The idea that she had already voiced out her feelings to him, even if he hadn't heard anything, was driving her crazy.
Because, what if Hunter actually heard it?! What if he didn't accidentally call her but instead, he prank called her? And maybe even recorded everything she said?
But her paranoia eased at school when she saw that nothing had changed. Hunter didn't approach her and Kira with Alex took her whole day up. Kira hadn't been happy with Mavis' sudden vacation.
When it was time to go home, Mavis said goodbye to her friends and left the school to go to the bus station. Only when she let the building did she see how heavy it was raining outside.
Cursing her luck, Mavis contemplated just running to the bus station but she didn't want to get sick again. After all, she still had a throat ache and her body didn't seem to agree with the approaching cold.
"Do you need a ride?" Hunter appeared out of nowhere, also looking at the sky in annoyance.
He looked really good that day. He was wearing his normal loose hoodie and well fitting jeans, but his hair seemed shinier and his face more handsome than before. The way his head was raised and his Adam's apple poked out also made him look amazing.
Mavis diverted her eyes from him and willed herself not to blush.
"No, it's okay," she said trying to look normal.
"Are you seriously gonna walk through the rain?" he asked as his eyes finally landed on her.
Mavis kept her own eyes up front, still too scared to look at him in the eye. Why was he even being nice to her?
"Your girlfriend won't like it anyways. And I don't wanna suffer a whole ride with her."
Hunter didn't say anything at first and all Mavis could hear was the rhythmic sound of the rain hitting the pavement nonstop.
"Well, lucky you," he said, "We broke up just today."
Mavis' head snapped in his direction.
"You did?"
Hunter nodded and even though Mavis tried hard not to let her muscles move on her own, she couldn't help but smile.
"I'm sorry to hear that," she said as she tried to cover her face with her hair.
"You can at least try to seem like you are," Hunter mused.
Mavis cursed herself, but she was way too happy to care about her facial expression.
"What happened?" she asked.
"It wasn't working."
Mavis looked at him again. Was he sad about it? Before she could say anything to try and figure out if he really was, Hunter added.
"I broke up with her."
And he held her eyes.
Mavis wanted to look away but at the same time, she didn't want to. Now she could look at his eyes for however long she wanted without feeling guilty or have someone claim him.
"She wasn't good for you anyways," Mavis said without being able to stop herself.
"Oh really? Who would be good for me then according to you?!"
And Hunter seemed quite amused by the situation.
"If I told you then you would find a new girlfriend tomorrow out of the blue just to spite me," Mavis whispered not really sure she should have made that joke, so she immediately broke eye contact too.
