When she woke up the next day, her head was hurting just as much and she felt quite sleepy. Lazily she took her phone from the nightstand and looked at the time.
"Damn, it's already midday!" she cursed as she struggled to find the energy to wake up.
While absentmindedly looking at her phone, Mavis remembered last night and immediately went through her calls. Unmistakably, her last call was with Hunter and according to the record, it had last well over two hours.
Mavis blushed and looked at the screen happily. As much as her head disagreed with her staying up until late, she couldn't deny it had been so great to actually fall asleep talking to Hunter. It was almost as if they had forgotten to be enemies for some time, starting with that weird moment in the pool when Hunter had decided to talk to her.
But her happiness didn't last long. After she got ready and went downstairs, she found her brothers and her dad eating lunch.
"Someone woke up!" Cole noticed her first and smiled at her.
Mavis smiled back, happy that her brother was back and that he was sitting with his family.
"What's up?! How are you doing?!" she asked.
"Oh, I'm doing great, but dad not so much." Cole joked as he looked their dad's way.
"Oh shut it!" dad snapped, "Try having three bad kids and see if your mornings are bright."
"What happened?!" Mavis asked wondering what did she miss.
"You slept through all of it but Mrs. Jensen and Hunter were here in the morning and there were shouts everywhere." Justin explained, "It was about you of course."
Justin's so nonchalantly said word made Mavis almost choke.
There was only one thing that could include her, Hunter, Mrs. Jensen and shoutings.
"What... Why?"
Cole gave her a weird look.
"Mrs. Jensen wants you to attend Hunter's birthday party today, but Hunter says he has banned you from going and nothing will change that," Justin explained between eating and trying to imitate Mrs. Jensen's voice. "And Mrs. Jensen was like 'I pay for your parties and I'm your mother. I'll invite whoever I want to the party.'"
"Basically shouting at me for no reason," her dad complained seemingly not appreciating Mrs. Jensen and Hunter fighting in front of him when he wasn't involved, "Either way, you are coming with us to dine with them tonight."
Mavis still remembered the day that Hunter had kicked her out of his birthday party.
Every year Mrs. Jensen took care to organize a big birthday dinner with Hunter's closest cousins and her family. She insisted on doing so since Hunter was her only child and she wanted to use the day as a good occasion to bring the family together.
Hunter had nothing against it either. He got a lot of presents on his birthday anyway and as much as he fought with Mavis, they were still too young to cause too much problem.
Then, on his 12th birthday, Hunter and Mavis had their biggest fight ever, and Mavis had always hated that it had happened the same day one of his cute cousins had asked her out. It had started over something small, something stupid Mavis had said, and then one thing led to another and the next thing she remembered was how Hunter had kicked her out of his birthday and forbid her from attending any of his birthdays.
Every single year after that she passed all Hunter's birthdays sitting alone at home and watching movies. Just because he hated her so much.
"Nah, I don't wanna go. I'm sure Hunter will make my time there a living hell."
