The next morning Mavis fell like sleeping in the whole day.
Her brother was back which meant he and Hunter would spend the whole day together completely ignoring her existence. In a way that was good. Despite everything she still didn't think she could face Hunter now that he knew how she felt about him at first.
It sucked because he had always hated her, and now he sort of had the upper hand.
She could get up and hang out with Justin but she didn't feel up to it either. She wanted to talk to someone, sulk, have some ice cream and be sad, but she didn't have someone anymore.
It really sucked.
On top of that, her throat was hurting that morning even though the cold had still to settle all that well.
Mavis spent a good hour in bed just keeping her eyes closed and making up random scenarios in her head. In the end, she got up and decided to pay a visit to her protest group.
She put on a washed out pair of jeans, a sweater and was out of the house without breakfast. On the way to the city center, she picked up hot coffee to help with the throat pain.
"I thought the evil spirits of capitalism kidnapped you and brainwashed you into a mindless, Starbucks confused teen." Her friend Tim greeted her at the entrance followed suit by a hug.
"Yeah sorry, my brother moved and school started. A lot has happened lately," she replied sheepishly.
"It's fine. We haven't done much anyway."
Their 'office' was a big room in Tim's house. He lived near the city center and most of his house was unused and empty. His parents were mostly traveling and they had enough money to buy a big house without needing one. It was a good place to hang out too.
Most of the room felt like a storage place due to the mess the group made there all the time. There were posters everywhere, cards, color splashes and project ideas. There were only 2 or 3 chairs overall because they mostly used cushions to sit on the floor to discuss ideas and plans.
At the far end, a bed with messily put curtains around it stood silent. It had been a refugee place for whoever couldn't spend the night at home quite many times. People who had bad families, people who needed to escape abuse and people who had no families to begin with. It was the bed in the corner that reminded Mavis that, despite everything, she was lucky to have the family she had.
Mavis spent most of the day hanging around her group who had many stories to share due to school having started again. Many of them were still in detention for getting arrested during the summer and some of them were already gathering ideas on what next to do to help as many teens as they could.
It crossed Mavis' mind that she could very well tell them what had happened with Elijah, but she decided against it. If her group was to know they would force her into speaking out and making the impossible to arrest the guy, but after what Hunter had told Mavis about Elijah's father, she was not going to risk getting on his bad side again.
Everything had been just a mistaken drunken night that she could easily ignore and move forward.
That was until she found Elijah waiting for her outside Tim's house. At first, she did think that Elijah was there for her since he was leaning against his car cooly, his hands on his pockets and his face looking her way. But he had dark sunglasses on and he already said he was going to leave her alone, so Mavis kept walking towards the bus station without stopping to even greet him.
"I'm waiting for you Mine. Where do you think you are going?!"
Mavis froze. His voice was laced with hatred and hostility once again, just like that day when he had planned to attack her.
