Mavis put on the white dress and tried to make her hair look smooth and tidy. She put a little bit of mascara to make her eyes pop out, and then she wore her shoes.
Someone knocked on her door.
"Are you ready?!" her dad asked as he entered her door. "You look beautiful."
She chuckled.
"You are obliged as a dad to say that."
Her dad rolled his eyes.
"Friday night Hunter was sleeping in your room. Why?!"
Now Mavis laughed for real, as she left the mirror and look at her dad awkwardly sitting at the edge of her bed.
"It took you two whole days to ask me, dad? Come on! What do you even think happened?!"
"He got drunk all right, but usually he crashes on your brother's room and not yours."
"Yes, but since Cole is not around anymore he has no one to talk to when he gets drunk like this. Besides, he left first thing in the morning..."
Mavis had been a bit bothered by how Hunter had even managed to wake up earlier than her and disappear but she hadn't tried figuring it out. After all, she herself had been asleep for most of Saturday, for the first time in a while sleeping without fear or bad dreams. Even strained in the small coach for the longest of nights, she had slept better than any of the previous days.
"Of course he left early. I trust him and all but my little girl is my little girl." her dad scoffed, is lips thining into a tight line.
"Wait, what?!" Mavis approached her dad carefully, "Are you telling me you kicked him out?!"
Apparently, because Mavis voiced the truth, a truth that made her dad blush just a little bit.
"Well yeah... He is still a guy Mavis and Hunter has no control when he is drunk. So, I do know he would never do something to you but as a father, I still have to keep that loose cannon away from you."
Mavis laughed, happy at the thought her dad was worried about her.
"Well, Hunter is a loose cannon, yes, but he would first blind himself before looking at me as if I was an actual person, let alone more than that."
"Well, then. I still don't want him sleeping in your room no matter what. Now let's go, the Jensens are waiting for us."
Mavis took her wallet and her phone and followed her dad outside.
Today, they had to go to the annual, 'life is fun' gathering a family in the next neighborhood always organized to tell people they knew what great of a life they lived just because they were an upper-middle-class family.
The said family used to live next to Jensen's and Mine's for the longest of time until 5 years ago they got a big amount of cash and from there they just kept collecting more. Mavis didn't mind that they moved away, they were an obnoxious family after all, but having to invite them every year, make them dress a certain way and expect them to listen them brag about all the things they owned, was nothing she looked forward to.
Everyone was wearing white this time, due to the gathering's theme and Mavis had been forced into wearing a dress.
"Finally!" Hunter groaned when they all gathered outside. "You don't need to add more pain to this annoying gathering..."
"Hunter!" Mrs. Jensen groaned. "Enough already. We will go and we will spend some hours in there and then you all can forget about it!"
Mrs. Jensen was the only one who enjoyed the gatherings, mostly because of the good food and the nice settings. She cared about nothing else.
