My mom rushes in frantically. “Evan, sweety, are you okay? What happened?”

“Mom, I’m fine. I just got pushed.”

She takes the paper towel off of my chin and cringes at the bloody mess. “Oh, Evan… We’re gonna have to the hospital.”

Mom, looks over at Connor. “Thank you, for helping him. Are you one of Evan's friends?”

Connor looks at me, then back at my mom. “Yeah. I’m Connor.”

Mom smiles widely. “Nice to meet you, I’m Heidi.”

“It’s nice to meet you, too.”

Mom, turns to me. “Okay, kiddo. Let’s get you to the hospital.”

“Uh, can, can I meet you in the the car? I’d like to talk to Connor quickly.”

Mom pats my arm. “Of course.” She then walks out.

I turn to Connor. “You, you didn't have to do that, you know? Tell my mom we’re friends.”

“No, Evan. I want to be friends. I mean, you seem cool. I’d like to be friends.” He looks down. “I, kinda, don't have any.”

I laugh, “Neither do I! I mean I have one? But, we’re not, not really friends? I wouldn't be surprised if he was getting paid to be my friend.”

Connor laughed. “Man, he must be the complete opposite of you, then.”

“I like to think he is.”

He smiles at me. “Well, you should get going.”

“Yeah,” I look down. “It was nice meeting you.” I blush a little

“Yeah, it was.”

I walk out of the office as quickly as I can. I have a strange feeling. Not like the usual strange feelings, this one was different, like the one I get when I try to talk to Zoe, Connor’s sister. I've had a crush on Zoe for awhile. Could I now be falling for Connor? What about Zoe?

I get into the car with mom.

She looks at me. “You ready?”

I simply nod.
