I'm in my room, boxing up my things. Connor’s helping me. Currently, he's wrapping up my karate trophies and putting them in a box. I took karate as a kid. I didn't go to any championships, only tournaments. I quit after dad left. I pick up a photo of me and my mom. It's the one time she got the holidays off and we went to Disneyland. I can't help but get overwhelmed with sadness and collapse to the floor in tears. Connor rushes over and pulls me into a tight embrace. He rubs my head and rocks me gently from side to side. I sob into his blacky-grey sweater. I think about mom, how much I love her. How much she loved me. How hard she worked to keep me happy. About every memory we shared, happy and sad.

Connor places me on my bed and lays down next to me. He runs his fingers through my hair in a soothing manner. It's not long before I calm down.

“Are you okay?” He asks, a worried look on his face,

I nod and sniffle. “I'm okay, just. Really sad? Kinda like how you used to be?”

“Evan.” He says, his voice filled with many emotions.

“Sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry about. You lost your mom, I understand.”

I well up again. “Don’t remind me.”

Connor pushes my face into his chest as I begin to cry again.

It's almost time for dinner when I have my room all packed up. Bed, desk, everything! All that's in it are the boxes. Tammy, the lady from yesterday, said we would go over mom's will and things like that tomorrow, I also said I’d be staying with Connor tonight.

Connor wraps his arms around my waist while I stare at my almost empty room. “You doing okay, baby?”

“Not really.”

He kisses my cheek. “It's all gonna be okay.” He tries to have confidence in his voice, but there is the slightest hint of worry in it. “How about we go out for dinner? My treat.”

“But I don't have anything to wear.”

“Nowhere fancy, so you can just wear what your wearing now, I promise.”

I turn to him and lay my head on his chest. “Okay.”

He picks me and carries me down stairs.

I put my shoes on while Connor puts his coat on.

He tickle tackles me just about as I'm to open the door. I giggle and he smiles.

“You ready?” He kisses my cheek.

I giggle. “Yeah.”

We walk out the door, hand in hand.

A few days have passed and the whole house is packed up, except dor mom's room. I walk into her room, it feels strange cause I don't unusually don't come in here. I look at the photos she has on her dresser. Pictures of her and her old college friends and… and a picture from mom and dad's wedding day. I pick it. Where is he now? Does he know mom...died? I sigh and set it down. I grab boxes and garbage bags. Her clothes and seasonal gear will go to goodwill. As for her other items, some I might keep and the rest I have no idea what I'll do with them.

Connor walks in into the room and sits next to me. “How's it going?”

“I don't know, I, I have no idea what, what to do with most of this, of her stuff.”

He wraps an arm around me, “Hey, hey. It's okay. If you don't want to get rid of it, you can always get a storage locker.”

“I know. I just. I don't know anymore.” My voice starts to get shaky. “I-I… I’m scared, Connor!”

Connor pulls me into a hug.

“I don't know what's gonna happen, I can't even think about tomorrow, I'm so clueless!”

“Oh honey,” Connor pushes his face into my hair. “I know, sweety. I know.”

Connor had helped me go through mom's room and pack everything up. It took a few hours, now we stand in an empty room. I sigh and sit in the doorway. I remember sitting in the doorway of her bedroom and watch her get ready for events or even dinner with an old friend. He she always looked so pretty, makeup or not.

Connor looks at me with worry on his face. I get up and pull him close. He blushes.

I sit uncomfortably. Yesterday, a few minutes after Connor left, Tammy came over. She said I'd be meeting my foster parents and today was the day. They stare at me waiting for me to say something. They completely give up on that idea and tell me their names. Lucy and Gary. Common, but not too bad.

“I'm Evan.” Stupid! They already know your name!

“And what's something you do in your free time?” Lucy asks

“Well, I, um… I usually, uh, hangout? With my… my boyfriend?”

“Boyfriend?” Gary asks like its a bad thing.

“Uh, yeah. I’m, I'm bi.”

“Thats wonderful.” Lucy smiles at me.

I smile back.

After talking for a while, they show me to my new room. I sigh as sit on my bed. This is it. My new home.
