Jeremy always keeps his necklace hidden under his shirt. Half of an eight-bit pixel heart with ‘player two’ printed on it hanging on a silver chain. He doesn't really like keeping it under his shirt all the time, but his father doesn't want him to start looking just yet. Jeremy was starting to get a little lonely.

He fidgets with the chain of his necklace while chewing on the end of his pencil. He puzzles over a math problem.

He sighs and lays his head down on his desk, “I hate math,” he says quietly to himself.

“Same,” a voice from beside him whispers back.

Jeremy turns his head.

A boy in a red sweater winks at him.

Jeremy blushes. Oh no… he's hot!

The boy giggles and goes back to his booklet that the teacher handed out

After the class, Jeremy turns to the boy, “I'm Jeremy, Heere. Uh, you seem, um, nice? God, that's cheesy, sorry…”

The boy giggles, “Thanks. I'm Michael Mell. I like your necklace.”

“Oh, uh,” Jeremy tucks his half of his soulmate's necklace back in his shirt, “Thanks.”

“It's funny,”

“W-what is?”

“I have the other half.” He nonchalantly takes his necklace out from under his sweater.

Jeremy's heart pounds in his chest, “No! No my dad can't, he'll freak!” Jeremy grabs his bag and races out leaving Michael confused; possibly heart broken.

At lunch Michael spots Jeremy sitting alone at a table. He walks up to the table and sits across from him. Jeremy munches on a sandwich and glances up at him.

“Hey, are you okay? Back in math you kinda freaked out…” Michael set his lunch in the table.

Jeremy's heart turns into a butterfly and his cheeks flush, “Yeah, sorry. My dad doesn't want me to meet you yet, but… that didn't work out, did it?”

“I guess not,” Michael digs into his salad.

The two boys sit in an awkward silence. Jeremy takes his necklace out from under his shirt. Michael watches as it sways back and forth in front of Jeremy's chest.

“What's the deal with your dad?” Michael glances up at Jeremy.

“Mom left, he says he's trying to ‘protect’ me. I don't understand it myself.”

“Damn, I'm sorry. About your mom. My dad left before I was even born.”

“Oh… sorry about that.”

“It's all cool. Mom and I live a cozy, little apartment.”

“I still live in the same house. There are times the house feels so big without her.”

Michael smiles, “So, I know you said your dad will freak if he finds out we met, but can I come over sometime?”

“I guess. He'll ask to see your necklace though.”

“I'll just say we didn't know and it was a complete coincidence.”

“It just might work.”

Michael and Jeremy walk into Jeremy's house. Jeremy sneaks Michael down into his basement. Michael plops himself into a bean bag. Jeremy smiles at Michael as he makes himself comfortable.

“These are awesome!” Michael looks at Jeremy who sits in a bean bag beside him, “Where'd ya get them?”

“I can't remember. I've had these for the longest time.”

“I need one for my room.”

“I think we have a few we don't use if you want one or two or all of them.”

“Really?”

Jeremy nods, “We don't use them anyway.”

Michael takes his half of their matching pieces, “I… I love you. I know that's weird to say cause I know pretty much nothing about you, but it's true.”

“I, I love you too.”

“Jeremy? Who is this?” Mr. Heere stands behind the two.

They both turn in their seats.

“Dad!” Jeremy looks at his father.

“Shit,” Michael says to himself.
