I walk down the stairs for breakfast. I light up at the sight of mom, but that soon sinks as I realize it's only Lucy at the stove. I sit down at the table, Gary sits across from me after kissing Lucy on the cheek.
He smiles at me. “Morning, kiddo.”
“G-good morning.” I nervously fidget with the hem of Connor’s shirt I wore to bed last night.
“That shirt looks a little big on you.”
“I-it’s Connor’s, he, uh, he let me keep it.”
“You and that Connor sure hangout a lot.”
“That's because, because he's my, my boyfriend.”
Gary leans back in his chair. “Mhm.”
“Oh let the boy be, Gary.” Lucy places a plate with pancakes and bacon in front of me. “I hope you like my cooking. I'm probably not as good as your mom but…”
“Oh, uh. My mom doesn't, uh, didn’t cook very often. I'm sure this will taste amazing!”
She gives me a warm smile and sits down. “Are you ready for your first day at your new school?”
“Uh, I'm a little nervous, actually.”
“There's no reason to be scared, it's a real nice school.”
I walk into the school and it smells like pot and cigarettes. I make my way to my locker, pushing between, through, and around people. When I get there, the locker is rusty and bent in, most likely from a fight. I try the combination. I hear it click, but it takes some force to get it open. Once it pops open it smells like someone left an egg sandwich in it for too long. I slam it shut. Well, that settles it. I'm not using that. Ever. I walk to my first class. Turns out, the classrooms are crappy too, so are the teachers.
When the final bell rings, I run out of the doors of the classroom and forcefully make my way to the nearest exit. I never thought the feeling of fresh air would ever feel so good. I glare up at the tall, brick building. You. Are hell. I hate you. I start to walk back home.
I walk inside and flop myself onto the couch. I curl up and quietly sulk. Gary walks in and sits beside me. I turn away from him, not allowing him to see me like this. After a few seconds there's a knock on the door.
Gary gets up. “I'll get it, kiddo.” He walks over to the door.
I watch as he opens the door. Connor stands outside.
“Ah, Connor!” Gary tries to sound enthusiastic.
“Hey,” Connor rubs his the back of his neck nervously. “Is Evan here?”
“He's on the couch.” Gary moves out of the way.
Connor walks in and sits beside me. “Evan? You okay?” He puts a hand on my back.
I shake my head and let out a sniffle.
“Evan?”
I whip around and shove my face into Connor’s chest.
Connor’s tense at first, but soon wraps me up in his arms. He holds me close and runs his fingers through my hair. Gary gives us a strange look. I just bury myself further into Connor’s embrace. Connor must have noticed Gary's look as well, and carries me up to my room.
He sits me on my bed and cuddles me. “What happened today?”
“Well, first, when I went downstairs for breakfast, I miss took Lucy for mom.”
“Oh, Evan.”
“And my new school is horrible. My locker’s so bad, I can't use it. I have to carry my stuff in my bag.”
“I'm sorry, baby.”
“It's fine. I'm going to ask if I can transfer back.”
“Do you think they'll let you?”
“Maybe if I try hard enough.” I drag out my words.
I walk down the stairs hesitantly, not wanting to talk to Lucy and Gary. They both sit in the kitchen.
I take a deep breath and walk in. “Hey, guys?”
They both look at me and I instantly regret saying anything.
“Yes, Evan?”
“I-I was just wondering, if you wouldn't mind, if I could, uh, transfer back to, to my old school?”
“Why? Isn't the one you go to now fine?” Gary leans back in his chair.
“Uh, actually, it's, uh. It seems pretty run down and, uh.” I nervously scratch the back if my head.
“That's funny, it was perfectly fine when I went to school there.” Lucy puzzles over the fact.
“With all do respect. Many things can happen in a good couple of years.”
Lucy looks a little taken back by my words. “Well, we'll see what we can do.”
“U-uh, thank you.” I walk out as fast as I can.
I head back up stairs. I sit on my bed next to a sleeping Connor. I smile and cuddle up to him. I close my eyes and every worry seems to drift away.
I’m shaken awake. I meet faces with Connor.
“Wha? What's wrong? Something happen?” I sit up and rub the tiredness from eyes.
“No, Evan. Everything's fine. I just. I felt lonely, so…”
I smile. “Can't sleep anymore?”
He nods.
I pull him between legs and lay his head on my chest. I start to braid his long, curly hair on both sides of his head. After I finish, I reach for a hair tie and join the two braids in a ponytail in the middle of his head. I used to braid mom’s hair like this all the time.
“I miss my mom.” I say aloud.
“I know you do. My mom does, I do, Zoey sometimes asks if she's coming over for dinner. The loss of Heidi has affected all of us, even dad. He sometimes talks about random memories he has of her.” Connor tries not let his voice choke up.
I sigh and hug him. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
I have to make a part four, I have to. I made myself need more from this story. (That's sad... really sad...) I'm so tired I forgot to put tree bros in the title... and it's only 9:15 p.m.... sorry!!! I'm tired!!!
