Connor and I sat at a table, waiting for Michael and Jeremy. I nervously fidget with the hem of my shirt. I haven’t seen Michael since Monday, when he shoved me into a row of lockers and told me to stop messing with Jeremy.

Connor puts an arm around me. “It’s okay, honey. Every thing’s going to be just fine. If he tries to pull some stupid shit, I'll beat the crap out of him.”

I take a deep, shaky breath and sit up straight. “Okay.”

He gives me a big, bright smile from seeing me so confident.

Michael and Jeremy walk up to the table and I immediately shrink at the sight of Michael.

“Sorry we're late.” Jeremy apologizes. “The traffic was really bad on Broadway.”

“It’s okay.” Connor says. “Getting here wasn't too easy for us either.”

Michael and Jeremy sit across from us. Jeremy in front of Connor and Michael in front of me. I really wish Jeremy sat in front of me, Michael stares at me with a mighty rage.

Jeremy looks at the menu. “What do want, Michael?”

“I’ll just have what your having.” He keeps staring, making me very uncomfortable.

I grab Connor’s hand, trying to signal him.

He gets it and takes me aside. “Babe, what's wrong?”

“Michael keeps staring at me, it makes me very uncomfortable.” I say in a hushed tone.

“Can you ignore him?”

I shake my head.

He sighs. “Okay. I've got a plan.”

We head back to the table.

“Sorry.” Connor apologizes.

“No, no. It's fine.” Jeremy says.

“So, Michael? Why ar pe you looking at my boyfriend?"

“I want to know what he plans to do with Jeremy.” Michael leans in towards me.

Jeremy looks confused. “Michael, he's just my step-brother. He doesn't want to do anything with me.”

Michael turns to Jeremy now. “You've changed, Jeremy! I bet you it was him!” He gestures towards me. “Nothing good ever comes from him!”

“Michael Mell! You apologize to Evan right now!”

“Or what?”

“Or we're through!”

Michael scoffs. “You wouldn't do that.”

“Try me.” I would say he has a very serious look on his face.

“This wasn't a very good idea, uh.” Connor waves to a waiter. “Excuse me? Can we cancel our reservation.”

“No, no. It's fine. We can stay.” I say.

“No, Evan. We're going.”

“Evan’s a loser who will only drag you down.”

I laugh. Everyone turns to me. “I'm sorry, you're acting like you two cool or something. Really your pushed around as much as much as I am.”

“What do you know?” Michael snaps.

“Don't pretend I don't see you at school. Other people, more popular people, may not notice you, but other ‘losers’ do. I do. You get shoved, I get shoved. You get ignored, I get ignored. We are on the same level. You want to be bigger than me, fine. Just be bigger than me in a different way. I am sick of this bullying! I get enough of it at school, I don't need it following me everywhere else I go.”

The table is quiet, shocked at my words.

“Come on, Connor.”

I get up leave, Connor follows after me.

I flop onto Connors bed. I text mom and tell her I'll be staying with Connor for tonight.

“Ev, you wanna wear one of my shirts to bed?”

“Sure.”

I watch as Connor digs in his drawers. He pulls out a plain black t-shirt. He hands it to me. “Here ya go.”

“Thank you.” I take my pants and shirt off and put on his shirt, only sleeping in my boxers. When I pull the shirt over my head, Connor is taking his shirt off. I blush and put my arms through the sleeves.

Connor turns to me and notices my flushed face. “See something you like?”

“Yeah, I do.”

Connor picks me up and spins me. He lays me down on his bed and cuddles me. “What you did today was very brave, Evan. I'm very proud of you.”

“I was just sick of it, so I decided to do something about it.”

“Yeah, you stood up for yourself.”

“I guess you could call it that.”

Connor kisses the top of my head. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

I sigh as eat lunch alone for the fourth time. Connor’s supposed to be back at school tomorrow, but I doubt he'll actually come. I put my sandwich down and sigh. Michael walks over and sits down across from me. I stare at him, waiting for him to say something.

He gives a deep sigh. “Evan, look. I'm really sorry about last night. I guess I never thought someone like you would go through the same things I do.”

“What you mean?” I ask.

“I thought you would be at least average. You don't get pushed, people see you and talk to you. I just… I thought you were higher than me. I was wrong, and I took your anxiety as a rock to push myself higher than you. I'm really sorry.”

“It's fine. High school isn't easy after all.”

He smiles, I smile back.
