It's the beginning of senior year for Evan Hansen and he’s shopping for the new year. He walks with his mom, Heidi. She had gotten the weekend off call and work to shop with her son.

“What about this one, Evan?” Heidi holds up a blue and black zip up binder, “It's got a handle so you don't have to carry it in your bag.”

“I-it's great mom, but I, don't really like the colors?”

Heidi puts it back on the shelf, “That's okay. We can find something else.”

“What about this one?” Evan takes a blue polo striped cloth binder off the self.

“You really like your polo, don't ya, honey?”

“I-I guess.”

“If you like it, put it in the cart.”

Evan places the binder in the cart along with the few other things in it.

“Lets go get you some new shoes, those ones look pretty worn out,” Heidi points at Evan’s old, white, scuffed Adidas he'd been wearing for two years.

“A-are you sure? I think these one's will last another year.”

“Not a chance,” Heidi places a hand on her hip, “The sole on your left shoe is peeling off and the laces look like they'll snap at any moment. You're getting new shoes.”

“They're so expensive.”

“I know, but you can't wear those shoes,” Heidi sighs, “I know money's a little tight right now. I'm sorry, but the nurses are understaffed and underpaid at the moment.”

“Mom, I can use these shoes for awhile longer-”

“Evan, sweetheart. I know you're trying to be cheap for our sake, but you need new shoes and I couldn't stress that more.”

Evan sighs, “Okay, I'm sorry. I didn't mean-”

“It's fine, baby. I understand,” Heidi pulls her son into a warm hug.

“I love you, mom,” Evan hugs his mom tight.

“I love you too,” A few seconds pass before Heidi breaks the hug, “Now let's get you shoes.”

Evan looks through the shoes to find a pair that 1) lasts long 2) not too pricey 3) he likes 4) fits. He finds a pair of blue converse sneakers with white laces.

Heidi walks up behind him, “Those look nice.”

“Yeah,” Evan checks the price tag, “They're not too expensive.”

“You like them?”

Evan nods.

“Try em’ on.”

Evan sits on a bench and fits the shoes. They fit perfectly. The shoes match Evan's list of needs, “I want these ones.”

“Okay, as long as you like them.”

Evan places the shoes in the cart.

“Okay,” Heidi pulls out the school list she had in her back pocket, “What do we need next?”

Evan packed his bag the day before school started up again. He sat on his floor making sure he had his subjects divided in his binder and notebooks. He got his pens and pencils in order with the system he’s used since grade seven. Heidi popped her head in before going to bed and reminded Evan not stay up past ten. As Evan settled in bed his phone pinged. He grabs his phone and checks the group chat.
