Connor hadn't always been distant from his family. He used to be inseparable from his sister and he used read the paper with his dad and cook with his mom. He used to be the happiest kid on the planet, but all that changed the moment his parents sat him down at the table.

Thirteen year old Connor sat down at the table, mom and dad sitting across from him.

“Connie,” Cynthia used the cute nickname she always used with him, “your dad and I have something we think you should know.”

“Connor,” Larry looked at his son, “We, uh, adopted you, when you were three. We had tried for a kid, but…”

“So I'm a replacement for a kid you couldn't have?” Connor’s tone was harsh.

“Please, Connie. Don't be mad. We love you just as if you were our own.”

“No,” Connor shook his head, “I don't believe you. You've lied to me all my life! How can I believe now?” Connor was standing now; a bad sign.

“Connor, please,” Larry spoke softly, “understand that we love you, we really do.”

“Fuck you!” Connor turned on his heel and stormed up to his room.

Larry took Cynthia’s hand and they both hoped that it would blow over and everything would go back to normal. Now they're convinced they didn't hope enough.

Connor walks down the school halls; his hands in pockets, the hopeless look he usually has on his face. A small blonde boy pushes his way to his class. Connor, feeling extra aggravated this morning, pushes him into a wall of lockers. He gives a smug smile to himself when he hears the boy's body hit the lockers and the laughter that follows it.

Evan runs to his class, his face flushed red with embarrassment. He sits with his legs crossed under the desk. His mind races with thoughts, the laughter, the shove. He didn't see who pushed him but he's convinced he did something to piss them off. Evan sighs and leans back in his seat throwing his head up towards the ceiling. The teacher walks in and the lesson begins.

Connor changes last. He doesn’t mind if he's late for his next class. He finishes changing when the next class walks in. As Connor leaves, the boy he'd pushed in the hallway walks in. Connor shoots him a look. Evan shrinks and politely pushes pass him. Connor sticks out his leg and trips Evan. After Evan hits the floor the change room bursts into whispers and giggles. Connor leaves the room and walks to his next class.

During Evan's gym class everyone stares and whispers. Evan starts to overthink and panics. In the middle of gym he rushes to the change room and locks himself in a stall. With hot tears rushing down his face, he holds his knees close to his chest. When the class is over and the other students come into change, Evan remains in the stall, trying not to draw any attention to himself. After everyone changes and leaves, Evan crawls out of the stall and splashes some water on his face.

In the other area, the change room door bursts open.

“Fucking hell!” an angry voice yells.

Evan crouched low and crawls under the sink.

Connor paces in the change room. Everyone thinks I'm a freak! I'm not a freak, they're the freaks! Connor yells in frustration.

“A-are, are you okay?” a small voice askes.

Connor looks over to see the small boy standing in the doorway, “What do you want?” he says angrily.

“S-sorry.”

Connor looks down and sighs, “It's fine,” he says reluctantly.

The two stand in an awkward silence.

“I'm Evan. Evan Hansen,” Evan pipes up.

“Connor Murphy,” Connor says, “at least, by law.”

“What do mean?” Evan tilts his head.

“I'm…” Connor looks away, “adopted. By the Murphy family.”

“Like, Zoe Murphy?”

“Yes.”

“Huh. So… you're, like, her brother?”

“Kinda.”
