Short

Michael watches the cracks on the sidewalk pass underneath his feet as he leaves Jeremy's. He had the best time of his life playing video games his new found boyfriend. The thought puts a smile on his face, though that smile fades as he reached the wreck of his house.

He pushes in the door and instantly he's bombarded by his father.

"Where the hell were you?" Michael's father yells.

"I-I was at my friend's?" Michael presses against the door trembling.

"What friend? You don't have any friends!"

"I-I..."

"You what?!" Mr. Mell snaps.

"I'm sorry," Michael curls into a ball in front of the door.

Mr. Mell kicks his son and he yelps in pain. He picks up the boy and tosses him across the room. Ignoring the screaming from the boy, he kicks him a few times over until he's out of breath. He stares at the young boy remembering how many times he had been is his place. His heart aches, but his mind is filled with rage and unreason. He beats the boy senseless and walks away lighting a cigarette.

Michael watches with tears in his eyes as the man he looked up to many years ago climbed up the stairs, abandoning him for the billionth time. He gets up, his stomach aching and his face wet with tears and blood. He turns to face the stairs, then he staggers out the door slams it shut behind him. This time he wouldn't let his dad abandon him, he refuses. This time, he was abandoning his father.

He runs down the street with full confidence. He runs until he can't anymore. He looks around and recognizes the neighborhood. He walks up to the familiar red door. He rings the doorbell and within a minute, Jeremy is standing in front of him.

Jeremy's face instantly fills with worry and pulls him inside, "Michael? What the hell happened?"

Michael looks back at his own reflection on a different person, "God, Jeremy. Your face."

"My face? What about your face? It's actually bleeding and shit!" his voice is high pitched and filled with worry.

"Jeremy, can- can I stay here?"

Jeremy furrows his eyebrows, "of course you can, but please. Please tell me what happened?"

"My dad, he-" Michael was cut short.

"Jeremy, what's going on?" Mr. Heere walks down the stairs in his house coat.

"Dad, something happened with Michael and-"

"Jeremy, no," Michael cuts off his boyfriend.

Jeremy turns to Michael, "It's okay, Michael. It's the only way to know you're safe for sure."

"No! No, I can't go to foster care, I can't," he tears up.

Mr. Heere kneels in front Michael and takes both his hands to comfort him, "Michael. You're clearly hurt, you can't hide that. Now, I need you to tell me who hurt you and why you're here."

Tears stream down Michael's face, "My dad. He hurts me and I don't know why," he wipes some tears away, "He really fucked me up tonight. I wasn't gonna let him be the one to walk away this time. That's why I'm here. I'm running away."

Mr. Heere pulls Michael into a hug, "Everything is gonna be okay, Michael. I'll contact the authorities and we'll get this all sorted out. You are more than welcome to stay here. Rest easy tonight, okay?"

Michael nods and whispers, "Thank you."

Mr. Heere breaks the hug and turns to Jeremy, "Look after him, make sure he's comfortable."

Jeremy nods and Mr. Heere head back up stairs.

Jeremy takes Michael in his arms and hugs him tight. Michael hugs back and holds back tears, but they fall out anyway. Jeremy leads Michael up stairs into his room. He gives him a pair of pajamas and fluffs the pillows. Michael lays down and hugs the sheets. Jeremy takes of his shirt and belt and climbs into bed with Michael. He wraps his arms around the boys waist and pulls him close.

"Jeremy," Michael whispers, "what if this the last time I see you?"

"That's not going to happen," Jeremy whispers back.

"But it might."

"It won't."

"How do you know that?"

"I've been in the system before. Dad, after mom left, was destroyed. He couldn't take care of me properly and people started noticing. Eventually social services rolled up outside and took me away. It was a year before I saw him again. A few months after, I was back to living with him and you never knew the difference."

Michael's quite some time.

"I love you Jeremy."

"I love you too, Michael."
