Tw: Abuse
“Hey, Jere!” I call down through the hallway as approach my best friend. When I get there, he hides his face and mumbles.
“Jeremy? Is something wrong?”
He mumbles again.
“Dude, I can't hear you.”
He walks off without saying anything. He's been like this for awhile. Withdrawn, barely says anything, and when he's around Christine, well. To put it short, he’s not like himself at all. There are times he would be completely normal, and other times, he'll act like helpless prey.
I watch as he walks down the hall.
“Hey, hey! Micah!” Jake leans against the lockers, “What’s up with Jeremy? He's been very out of it lately.”
“I know. I think it might have something to with Christine.”
“Christine? What would Christine ever do? She's too sweet.”
“That's what she wants you think.”
“What do think she's doing?” Jake pushes himself of the lockers.
“Jeremy didn't look at me this morning. I think Christine… is abusive.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow your roll. You Really think Christine would to that. You think Jeremy would let her do that?”
I gave him a deadpanned look, “Jake, all the signs are there. We need to get the rest of the squad together and make a game plan. My house after school. Tell everyone, but Jere and Christine. We can't let them know what we're doing.”
As soon as everyone was piled in and comfy I started the meeting.
“You all know Jeremy and Christine have been dating for quite awhile, but Jeremy has been off for a few weeks and suspect Christine might be abusive.”
“Wait,” Brook intervenes, “Christine, abusive?”
I facepalm, “Yes, Brook. I know she seems really sweet, but we don't know what happens behind closed doors. She could be doing much worse for all we know.”
Everyone sits in silence and shock.
“So,” I continue, “we need a plan to split them up. Jenna and Brook, I need you two to keep Christine as far away from Jeremy as possible tomorrow.”
Both girls nod.
“Rich, Jake, I need you both to make Jeremy's basement as comfortable as possible when I get Jeremy home.”
“So what are you gonna do?” Jenna asks.
“I'm gonna talk to him and tell him what he needs to hear. Oh! Rich! I need you to bring Jere a change of clothes and pajamas for tomorrow.”
Rich nods.
“Alright team,” We all put a hand in the middle of our circle and chant, “one, two, three, go squad!”
The next day, the plan is action. Brook and Jenna keep Christine away and I catch Jeremy at his locker.
“Hey, Jeremy! How ya doin’?” Jeremy wore a hoodie so it's hard for me to see his face.
“I'm fine,” He opens his locker.
“Jere, I've noticed you haven't been yourself all to much lately. I'm worried about you.”
Jeremy pauses, “I, uh. I'm just going through a rough patch is all,” he puts his books in his locker.
“A rough patch with Christine?”
“My dad.”
“Jere, can you please look at me?”
Jeremy stops, “Michael, I-”
I pull down his hood and bruises cover his face and his right eye is purple and puffy.
Jeremy freaks and pulls his hood back up, “Michael! What the fuck? You know how much trouble I could get into with Christine if anyone saw my face!?”
“So, Christine did this to you?”
Jeremy opens his mouth, but nothing comes out.
“Jeremy, you don't deserve this. I know you've been pining for Christine for years, but she isn't who you thought she was,” I pull him into a hug, “It’s time to let go. I'm only saying this because I care about you. I'm your friend. Your best friend.”
Jeremy pulls out of the hug and presses his lips against mine. I press his body against the lockers and kiss him back.
He pulls away and puts his head on my chest, “Ever since Christine started to mistreat me, I found my comfort in you. But Christine started to think something was going on between us, so she started to pull me away,” Jeremy starts sobbing, “Michael, I'm so sorry. I was so stupid to think she would change.”
“Hey, hey, hey. It’s okay,” I rub my hand up and down his back, “You're okay now. Do you wanna go home? I had the squad do a few things to make sure you are well protected.”
Jeremy nods.
“Okay, come on.”
I walk Jeremy out to the parking lot and the unexpected happens. Christine is walking in and spots us.
“Jere-bear!” She wraps her arms around Jeremy's waist. She looks at me, “Hey, Michael!”
“Hey, Christine,” I act as if nothing's wrong, “how are you?”
“I'm good, I'm good,” she turns back to Jeremy, “babe, you wanna come over tonight? I rented our favorite movie!”
“Uh, I, uh. I already have plans. Sorry,” Jeremy doesn’t sound very confident.
“Oh,” she tries to look a little disappointed but I can see right through it, “well, tomorrow night then.”
I give Jeremy a little nudge.
“Uh, Christie. The, the truth is,” Jeremy took a deep breath, “I, I don't want this relationship with you any more. It's hurtful. And what you did the other day, not cool,” he tugs down his hood.
Christine clutches her fists, “Jeremy Heere, you will pull up that hood and stay with me.”
“No,” I say.
“What?” she looks at me.
“No,” I say again, “he will do what he wants to do, even if that's moving on from you. Look at him. You abuse him. He deserves much better than you. Come on Jeremy,” I start walking to my car, but Jeremy doesn't follow. I turn around, “Jeremy?”
“See? He prefers to stay with me,” Christine says cockily.
“Jeremy, you don't have to stay with her,” I reach out my hand, “let's go home.”
Jeremy walks to me, but Christine stops him, “Jeremiah Heere!”
“Christine, that's enough!” Jeremy yells.
Christine looks at him like ‘how dare you defy my power’.
“We're done, Christine. Goodbye,” he walks towards me and takes my hand.
“I'm so proud of you,” I smile at him.
Tears fill Jeremy's eyes, “I'm free,” he whispers softly.
“You are free.”
We both break into tears. We cry in my car for a few minutes before I take him home.
