"So, how have you been?", I asked as we sat at a table. "Busy with work, but good. How about you?", she asked and took a sip of her coffee. "I've been good. Busy as well, but the book tour is almost over which means finally some free time", I said. "How is the job?" "It's pretty nice. I get to see a lot more of america. I even got to go to Europe once, Germany. It was amazing. I'm here for work now actually, but I saw the poster on the window and I decided to step in for a while and listen." I smiled. "Glad you did."
"So..", we said in sync. "You first", she said. "You go first", I said back. She sighed. "I'm sorry I couldn't come with you, and I'm sorry I never called or texted you", she said. "Why didn't you?" She shrugged her shoulders. "We broke up. I tried to get over you, and hearing your voice or just talking to you wouldn't help much." I nodded. "Did it work?", I asked. "What?" "Did you get over me?" She looked down. "Not at all. I thought I did, but then I saw you at the book store and it was like I fell in love with you all over again", she said.
Without saying anything, I crashed my lips onto hers.
"I didn't either", I said as I pulled away. She smiled and leaned in for another kiss.
"But it won't work", she said. "What makes you think that?" "I'm gone all the time and you are too", she said. I sat back down. "My book tour is over after tomorrow. Chicago is my final stop. I'll be home for a long time after this", I said. "But I won't be", Lily said. "That's okay. I get to see you when you come home. It's doable, as long as we both want it."
She reached over the table and grabbed my hand. "I would love nothing more than for us to be together again, but do you think we can actually do that?" I nodded. "We can just take it easy for now, see how we'll do. We're grownups now.. sort of." She laughed. "We're a year older", she said. "I'm just trying to say we've both matured. Look at what we've accomplished at this age. You, 22 and a company representative, traveling the entire US. Me, 21 and a damn writer. Who says we can accomplish all that, but not be able to maintain a relationship. We got this", I said. She nodded.
"You convinced me." "Really? With that lame ass speech", I asked. She shook her head. "I didn't even listen to what you just said. I just looked into your eyes and I was sold." I couldn't help but smile. "Okay then", I said. "Okay then", she repeated.
I checked my watch.
"I have to be at the airport in 20 minutes, I should get going", I said. "I'll drop you off", she said. She took out her phone and send a text. "Break up text to your back up girlfriend?", I asked jokingly. "No way. You actually think I'd break up with her?" I laughed. "I was hoping you would."
"Come on", she said. She left some money on the table and we walked out.
She opened a car door. "This is your car?", I asked. She nodded. "How?" "Just get in", she said. She got in after me. "Wait.."
"Airport please", she said. A man behind the wheel turned around. "Sure thing.""You have a driver? How rich are you?", I asked. "All company perks." "I don't even have that. Okay I totally have that but still", I said. She chuckled and grabbed my hand, intertwining her fingers. "I've missed you", she said. I smiled. "I've missed you too." Our lips touched.
"I won't be home for another three or four days, you know", she said. "I've been without you for little over a year, I think four days won't be a problem", I said. "That's too bad, because I don't think I'll be able to live with that." "I promise to call and text you every day until you're back in LA", I said. "Deal."
We got to the airport and got out of the car.
"See you at home", I said and I kissed her. "Good luck at your final stop tomorrow." "Thank you", I said and smiled. She cupped my face and gently placed her lips on mine. "Be safe. Let me know when you land." I nodded and pecked her lips a couple of times.
"I really have to go now", I said. "I'll see you soon!" She smiled and nodded. "See you soon." She kissed me one more time before I left.
