Ollie
Three months later
It had been three months since Jamie was born and everything so far had been perfect in my eyes, but I wished for Holly to be by my side every day. Being a father now made me think of my own. It had been so long since I’d properly thought of him, I missed him so much, and I hoped he was proud of me. On top of missing my father I also missed my mother, she had always protected me from everything. I just missed her. Strangely enough I missed my brother too. In the past few months I had decided to forgive him for what he did to me. If he didn’t do what he did to me, I wouldn’t be here now, I wouldn’t have Jamie or Holly.
I wanted to see them.
I needed to see them.
I loved them.
I missed them.
I suddenly made a rushed decision to visit them one afternoon in July. “Holly, is it okay for me to take Jamie out for the day?” I asked her as soon as my decision was made.
“Sure don’t be out to late,” she smiled. I knew she thought this time was for Jamie and me to bond, and it was but also it was a chance to see my family again. “Call me on your way home.”
Jamie and I walked to my car, I bought it two years ago with the money I had saved up over the years, at first I was nervous about driving it but soon became comfortable about using it. I strapped Jamie in the car seat in the back of the car. I never placed him in the front just in case we got into a crash, he would less likely to be hit in the back than the front.
I settled behind the steering wheel and took a quick look at Jamie to confirm that I did strap him in. I turned on the car and flicked on my favourite radio channel, Holly always changed it when she was in the car. I put the car into gear and headed off.
It took two hours to get to our final destination, including two fifteen minute stop to change and feed Jamie but luckily he slept most of the way. When we drove through the village I hadn’t encountered in almost three years, I was scared shitless. As the car trekked down the familiar road my hands started to sweat as I became nervous.
I slowed outside the house I grew up in. it looked the same, nothing had changed. The walls were still bare brick, and the windows were still peeling paint. The small garden in front of the house held the gravelled drive and the short cut green grass. Unusually, the front door was wide open so I could see through to the narrow hallway.
I took a quick deep breath before climbing out of my car. I shut the door quietly and unclipped Jamie from his seat. I held him tightly to my chest as I walked towards the front of the house.
“O-Ollie!” a masculine voice cried from the right. I slowly turned to see the tall stature of my brother, Wes. “Oh my god. It’s you Ollie.” My brother ran up to me and hugged me tightly in his arms, this shocked me deeply, the last time I saw him was the day I left. “I’m so sorry, Ollie. I’m sorry.”
“I forgive you,” I told him surprisingly. He pulled away from me and smiled. His eyes immediately latched onto Jamie.
“Who’s he?”
“I’ll tell you with Mom.”
“I’ll go and get her.” He headed to the front door, he called into the hallway, “Mom, come down now there’s something at the door for you.”
I heard her feet loudly stamper down the stairs. She slid around the corner and came to a sudden stop as she saw me. Her body was like a statue, she was unmoving, he eyes looked straight ahead and her chest was still. It could have been only a couple of seconds before she fell to the ground in shock. I could easily understand why she had this reaction, she thought I would never come back, I thought I wouldn’t have come back, and now look where I am.
