Ollie
We were out in town when the biggest shock of my life happened. I was about to become a father.
Holly and I left at ten o’clock that morning to shop for the last few supplies, our baby wasn’t due for another three days so I thought everything was going to be okay. It turns out it wasn’t. Holly went into labour just after lunch, we were in one of those baby clothes stores, when it happened.
Holly scream out in pain, “Ollie the baby’s coming.” When I got to her she had tears streaming down her face, her eyes were red and her mouth set in a painful frown. Just from looking at her I could tell she was in pain, I knew I had to get her to the hospital as soon as possible. So I dumped all of our belongings and picked her up. Surprising she wasn’t that heavy. I was so thankful that I had parked the car close to the shops.
When I reached the car I sat her lying in the back of the car for her comfort and drove as quickly as possible to the hospital. On the way I called Carley to tell her that Holly was going into labour. Carley decided to call the hospital so they knew we were coming. It was just as well.
As soon as we got there they rushed Holly to the maternity ward was and prepare her to give birth. During the half hour car journey to the hospital Holly’s contractions had increased over the time. Each one now was about a minute apart. The nurse with blonde hair suddenly called out, “She’s nine centimetres. Be ready to become a father Ollie.”
“Ollie,” Holly cried. “Hold my hand.” I quickly grabbed her hand tightly. After the contraction was over she asked me, “Can you call Josh?”
Josh…
I was jealous of Josh. He had been her best friend since they were babies, he knew everything about her, he was the first one to know about our baby and he was probably the first one to kiss her. I didn’t want to call Josh but I knew I would for her, she deserved to see her best friend. God I wished I was her best friend but no I was her baby’s daddy. I would take that job to the grave because no child should be without their daddy.
I quickly exited the hospital room Holly was in to call Josh using Holly’s phone. I found his name under favourites and called. After a few rings he answered, “Hey Holly how’s it going?”
“Hi Josh, its Ollie.”
“Ollie. Huh. Why you calling?”
“Holly’s having the baby right now and she wants you here,” I told him. “I don’t want her upset that you’re not here for the birth of her first child, so get your ass down here as soon as possible.”
“I’m on my way. Look after her,” he told me hanging up.
I headed back into her room, there she was crying in pain. “He’s coming,” I told her. Her face turned into a tight smile before another rush of pain over took her. “I want to catch the baby,” I told the blonde nurse.
She nodded, “Okay, when I tell you to catch, catch. The head isn’t showing yet so you’ve got a few minutes but I’ll need Holly to start pushing very soon.”
“Thank you.” I walked back to the head end of the bed and gripped Holly’s hand. I looked at her face, it was beautiful, even though it was tear stained and blotchy she was still beautiful. I leant down and gave her a light peck on her lips. “I’m proud of you,” I whispered, she smiled back at me. Her face then contorted in pain.
“She’s ready,” the nurse smiled. “Holly I would like you to start pushing, when your next contraction hits.” Holly gripped my hand tightly as she pushed. This happened for the next few minutes. “Okay the head is showing, Ollie are you ready to catch your baby?”
