Chapter Thirty Seven
Sadie had been at her parent's house for maybe an hour before the doorbell rang. Startled, Sadie slammed her book closed and jumped off the couch. She opened the door and saw Bryan standing there. He was wearing a striped button-up and black slacks. In his hand's he carried about seven grocery bags, making his biceps bulge.
"Can I come in?" Bryan asked with a smile. Sadie turned with embarrassment knowing she had been caught staring. She stepped out the way and he walked in.
She pointed out the kitchen where he set down the food. He turned to her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"Hello." He said with a smile.
"Hi." She said with her eyes shifting from the bags to Bryan.
"Sorry for just dropping by. I was sitting around the house when I remembered that you said you always eat dinner alone. I want that to stop. So, Im going to win you over with food." Sadie gave a giggle. "I hope you like steak."
"I love steak," she replied.
"Well, the steak needs time to marinate so I'll throw them in and we can play go fish." He pulled out playing cards from his pocket.
They went to the living room and started playing.
"Do you have a seven?" Sadie asked.
"Go fish!" Bryan gave her a cheesy smile. She pulled from the pile and gave him a mischievous grin before setting down the pair.
Bryan shook his head and looked down at his hand: 2, 5, 4, 6, 10, A, J, 9, K, 8.
"Got a ten?" He asked her.
"Go fish."
He picked up a new card and a smile went on his face as he sent it down.
"Ha! I got it!"
"Do you have a four?"
Bryan handed over his four. Sadie looked down at her cards: A, 3, 6, 10, Q, K, J, 8, 5, 2.
"How bout a six?" Bryan asked her. Sadie handed him the card.
2-2.
"Do you have a Jack?"
"Fuck." Bryan handed over his card. "How bout a two?"
She grabbed the two out of her hand and gave it to him. At the end of the game, Sadie won with 14 pairs to Bryans 12.
"I think that's the closest game of go fish Ive played," Bryan said making Sadie giggle.
"So, you said we were cooking a steak. With what?" Sadie asked.
"Mashed potatoes and green beans," Bryan told her, admiring the twinkle that was in her eyes when she talked about food.
Bryan looked at his phone and was astonished that it took them three hours to play the game. But in those three hours, Bryan felt he finally got Sadie to open up to him.
Bryan made his way to the kitchen with Sadie following behind.
"How can I help?" Sadie asked.
"You can sit and look pretty as I impress you with my cooking skills?" She let out a laugh which put the brightest smile on Bryans face.
"Ok! Sounds simple enough." He let out a quick laugh and turned to the fridge.
Bryan grabbed the bag of green beans and started to chop them up. When he was done, he put the steaks in the oven to broil. He grabbed a saucepan and filled it with water and a pinch of salt. When the water started to boil he threw in the green beans.
He grabbed a pot filling it with water and put it on the stove to boil. He grabbed the red potatoes and started to peel only half of them. When the water was boiling, he threw in all the potatoes.
After the steaks had been in the oven for fifteen minutes, he took them and flipped them over, putting them back in for fifteen more minutes. He gave the green beans a quick stir.
He poked at the potatoes and when they were soft enough, he drained the water and turned off the burner. Bryan grabbed a masher and began to mash the potatoes. He added a bit of sour cream to add a bit of creaminess.
Bryan plated the food and gave it to Sadie with a smile on his face. He watched as she put it in her mouth and made a sound that almost brought him down to his knees.
"So you liked it?" Bryan asked her.
"Its delicious!"
"Good because I put my heart into that meal."
She made the noise again after she ate some of his potatoes. His knees actually buckled this time.
"Um let's go watch a movie or something?" Bryan awkwardly said after they were done eating.
"Yeah ok."
They walked over to the living room and Sadie went over to the movie rack and looked at the selection she had. She turned and looked over at Bryan with a look of uncertainty.
"Whats up?" Bryan asked confused as to why she was making such a face for a movie.
"Can we watch the new Beauty and the Beast?" her eyes lit up in the most adorable way.
Bryan couldnt say no if he wanted to. He gave her a smile and a nod. She popped it in and walked over the couch.
By the time Be Our Guest was blaring through the sound system, Sadie was fast asleep. Bryan kept looking down at Sadie and began slowly falling into love.
