CHAPTER 33: JUST DRUNK

"Anika, tell me." I murmured poking her with my finger for the hundredth time. She smiled.

"You don't need to know."

"But I want to know him. Do- do you like him ?" I asked, my voice soft and slurred.

She smiled again, a full one, the same million dollar one. My heart broke a little more. So, she likes him. Maybe even loves ? I have been so naïve thinking about all the possibilities that she might just like me. She had talked about him a few times too, I vaguely remember. But I can't stop that aching feeling in my heart.

Nonetheless, I smile too. "I am happy for you." I force out, stretching out my lips.

"Shivaay, are you looking the rain ?" She asked and only then I noticed the slight drizzle and the pitter patter of the rain.

"Yeah."

"It looks serene isn't it ? Doesn't it feels that life should stop for a while as we just stare and breathe in the petrichor." She says, her eyes filled with love and emotion that I found it hard to say no.

"I love the petrichor too."

"You know, why rain is so divine and earthly ?" She asks a small smile playing over her lips letting me know, that she knows the answer.

I shook my head, waiting for her excitement to grow and her smile to soothe my insides.

"It acts as a messenger of love between the clouds and the field. It lessens the burden of the cloud by precipitating and quenches the thirst of the fields who beckons it."

Dumbstruck, I looked at her enthralled. "That's good knowledge."

"I sometimes read too. It makes me forget my worries for a while and my attention remains rapt the time I am engrosses in it."

"Why do you worry ?"

"I don't have a job. I have Sahil and I have to be there for him, I have to be strong."

I notice the droplets that have now penetrates inside my tuxedo, making me feel cool and slightly sticky. I ran my hands through my hair, like a child seeing the droplets hop away from them. I heard her laugh. Again.

I turned my head toward her as she ruffled my hair. I wanted her to keep doing that, make it messier I won't mind, as long as she is there with me. But, I didn't said anything. I kept mum.

Eventually her hand travelled back to my hair again, as she gently fixed them. Her eyes trained on my hair solely not giving me a glance to see her, maybe scared that I will get to know something.

"Its okay now." She said quietly.

I ruffled it pretty hard. "No, it isn't." I expected her to laugh but she didn't and kept looking at me.

"Don't you have my picture on the phone ? You know it would stay longer." I said, trying to light up the situation, grinning but that too didn't reached my eyes.

She must have noticed as she averted her eyes unlocking her phone showing me my picture. That picture in which I was snoring which was actually not true. "You didn't delete that ?"

"It's on my phone so obviously the answer is in negation." She said in a duh tone.

"Okay.." I said unsure.

She laughed lightly throwing her head back and pinched my cheek. "You are so cute when you are drunk."

"Hello!" I said showing my hand. "I am not cute, I am dashing and hot."

"Keep telling yourself that."

"Its true, so of course I would."

"Who told you that ?"

"Well, there was a girl in the party, who did call me."

She giggled. "Don't you know, she lied through her teeth.

"You are stupid."

"You are annoying."

"You are stupid."

"Annoying."

"Stupid. Stupid. Stupid." I said.

"Annoying annoying annoying..wait, annoying to the power of infinity."

"I hope you know that the infinity card doesn't work."

"Nope, I don't. It wasn't in the list of rules of insulting people." She said in half vexation.

We both started fighting like kids, keeping our ears closed by our forefingers shouting insults.

Our eyes went to notice that the small red head cat meowing slowly retreated from the bench.

We looked at each other for a moment before laughing like barbarians.

"We fought like some savage people." I said in between my laughs.

"Hooligans, to be precise." She shouted back, a covert grin masked upon her face.

"Shivaay, Anika." Om called Sharvi trailing behind them.

"Yeah." We chorused and they looked at us, crossing their arms across their chest.

"We are trying to look for you for the past ten freaking minutes. What were you doing ?" Sharvi asked.

"Star gazing." I answered, falling a little forward, held by Sharvi.

"Drunk Shivaay at your service." I joked.

I spared a glance at Om, he looked well..pissed. "I told you not to."

"I know."

"I asked him." Anika interjected.

"Why ? Anika, I really thought that you are the sensible one." He said disappointed written over his face.

"I am sorry." She said softly.

He didn't spoke and held me tightly leading me back into the party as we waited for Rudra who was well doing what we expected. Flirting.

"Excuse me pretty lady, but we want our brother back." Om said politely as she winked before going back, grooving on the serenade.

I tapped by foot against the floor waiting for them to finish some talking.

I spotted her again, with Sharvi her face serious a minute before she went back to smile. I saw her handing some money to Sharvi. I went back to her again. Not that I can't keep myself away from her, its just my electrons are attracted to her protons. I laughed at my thought.

Approaching her, I saw a surprised look covering her face. I stood close to her and then turned examining the crowd. Everyone was busy in their own brisk business, the party not slackening.

Would it be bad if I kiss her on the cheek ?

But what reason I would give for the not so decent act of mine ? You are drunk, my inner voice reminded. Just like that, a sly smile took over my face slowly changing into a pure and genuine one as I looked at her.

And so I did.

I kissed her on the cheek before going back to my brothers, maintaining a look that defined my innocence.
