Here's a personal headcanon that I have:
What if, between series 4 and 5, Hunith died?
Because for me, it would explain Merlin's massive shift in behavior. I mean, sure, he probably would have changed after all that had happened to him anyway, but it was such a drastic difference that it almost shocked me.
Maybe, losing his mother sobered Merlin up.
It would also explain Merlin's complete and utter devotion to Arthur.
Yeah, he was always super loyal. But in series 5, Arthur was everything to Merlin.
Maybe because Arthur is pretty much all Merlin has left.
Also, I feel like if Morgana hadn't turned evil, she would have been an avid shipper of Gwen and Arthur.
I mean, who wouldn't want to see their two favorite people- who are so obviously in love- together? I can imagine her and Merlin trying to set up the two in any way possible.
For example:
Merlin tells Arthur that Morgana wishes to go for a ride with him, and Morgana sends Gwen instead. I don't know, it just seems cute to me.
Anyways I made myself sad now so I gotta go.
