Felicity's POV
I had no trouble noticing Draco trying to catch my eye all throughout dinner that night, but I pointedly ignored him. Instead I made small talk with Neville, before a topic of importance came up.
"Speaking of Herbology, Neville," I said, talking quietly as to not be overheard, "I. . . kind of need your help in that class." I'd never enjoyed admitting that I needed help. Nev was elated.
"You need my help-" he started in a loud voice before I slapped my hand over his mouth. "Shhh!" I hissed, glancing around to see if anyone heard him. Luckily, most people seemed too absorbed in dinner or their own problems.
"Yes," I reiterated quietly, "I do. Big shocker, I know." I could feel him grinning under my hand before I slowly lowered it from his face. "Of course I'll help you, Fel," he laughed. I smiled and ruffled his hair. "Good," I stated, "because you didn't have much a choice anyway. Sibling rules: you're obligated to help me."
He only rolled his eyes with a smile.
I cleaned my plate off after a second helping of dessert before finally making eye contact with Draco. My eyes flicked towards the towering doors of the Great Hall, only for an instant, before I stood and and joined the slow but steadily growing stream of students heading for their dorms. I didn't check to see if he'd even seen me, but strode confidently out of the hall.
No one batted an eye as I took the corridor opposite of the one to get to Gryffindor Tower. I ventured through hallway after hallway, staircase after staircase, until I reached our usual empty classroom. I sat on a desk in a shadowy corner in the back of the class and waited. Not five minutes later, the door opened to reveal Draco Malfoy.
"Felicity?" he whispered aloud. I felt a sudden surge of irrational anger as I hopped off the desk and marched towards him. "Why were you in Diagon Alley before the start of the term? And why the hell did you think it was even remotely okay to break my best friend's nose?" Draco's eyes were wide with surprise.
"First off," he said slowly, hands raised in surrender, "You've done a lot worse to my best friends." I dropped my gaze to the floor. I didn't want him to see my expression and know that I knew he was right. "And secondly, why are you spying on me?"
I crossed my arms in front of my chest. "I wasn't spying on you. . . I just happened to take note of your suspicious behavior and followed you into Knockturn Alley." His head snapped up. "You went into Knockturn Alley by yourself?"
I didn't know if telling him that I was with Ron and Mione and Harry would be worse, or lying and saying that, yes, I'd gone alone.
"I can take care of myself, Draco." There. I didn't technically answer his question. He sighed and ran a hand down his face, and then through his hair. I tried not to take note of how long it'd grown, or how much I wanted to run my own hands through it.
"I need you to trust me, Felicity," he eventually said, and I knew by the tone of his voice that this was serious. Life-or-death serious. But I still murmured, "I trusted you once before-" he winced, "-and I'm all for second chances, but. . . forgive me if I'm a little hesitant." He nodded and said gently, "I understand."
He took my hand and led me to a desk. I sat on top of it and he stood between my legs, as we'd done many times before. Back when things were different. Before we'd realized we truly were facing a war, and worse than that, facing each other in that war. But instead of dwelling on that, I asked, "How did the Amortentia smell to you?"
He skimmed his hands down my arms before lacing our fingers together. He leaned his forehead against mine, and damn me if I didn't want to kiss him in that moment. "You," he breathed quietly, "Other stuff, but mostly you."
