I spread the map out on the bonnet of the Blue Camaro at the side of the Highway. Billy was pacing up and down as he smoked his cigarette. This was the third day of driving and we were both pretty exhausted and right now, pretty lost "Ok, I think I've got it" I called to Billy as I wiped the sweat from my forehead "We carry on straight and take the third left off of the Highway" he came over to me "Are you sure?"
"I'm pretty positive" the sun was setting and Billy wanted to call it a day which was why we were looking for the nearest Motel. "Alright,because we can't waste much more gas.. We've got enough to get into California" I folded the map up and turned to face him
"How much cash have we got?" I asked him leaning back against the Car Bonnet.He slipped his hand into the back pocket of his tight jeans and pulled out the wad of cash. We'd used Billy's Dad's card at an ATM and withdrew as much as it would let us which was only about Five hundred dollars.When we'd gone to use the card again at a Motel it was declined. We figured that Billy's Dad had noticed it had gone missing and got it cancelled "Two Fifty" he told me stuffing it back into his pocket I wrapped my arms around his shoulders "Come on, let's go" he told me taking my arms away and holding my hands in his "We'll go to this motel and then tomorrow, we'll try and get to Vegas" I smiled at him as he let go of my hands and got into the Car. I got in beside him as he started the engine and pulled back onto the Highway.

We found the Motel and there was a Diner across the road which was perfect because I was starving. This particular Motel was just like the rest of them, not very pretty to look at but fine for spending a night. We walked into the main reception and there was a middle aged woman sat at the desk watching the twenty four hour news channel. I let my eyes wonder around the room whilst Billy used his looks to get us the cheapest rate possible. The TV suddenly showed a picture of a Police officer, one I recognised, I think his name was Hopper and to my horror Stacey was in the frame. I walked back over to the desk slowly as I watched the report. The TV was muted so I couldn't hear what the Cop was saying but I figured it was about me and Billy.. Stacey appeared again and she was crying as she spoke to the reporter and then my School photo appeared and beside that a picture of Billy. I tugged Billy's jacket sleeve as he flirted with the Woman and when he didn't look down at me I kicked him in the shin. He groaned and looked towards me angrily. I nodded to the TV on the back worktop. Billy's jaw twitched as the screen changed to some sort of code "Shit" he muttered turning back to the woman "Actually we won't be needing that room after all" he told her before grabbing my arm and yanking me outside "We're sleeping in the Car" he unlocked the Camaro and we both got in "We'll park up somewhere.. I need to get these plates off" He got out again and I followed him
"Billy, slow down" I told him as he bent down in front of the trunk and started trying to pull off the nailed on licence plates "They showed my licence plate on national TV Kat!" I licked over my lips, the Sun had set now and the air was cool. I looked over at the Diner across the street longingly before turning back to Billy "Maybe we should go and grab something to eat and just try and think this through"he bit his lip and stood up looking across at me as I rubbed my bare arms "Are you cold?" he asked me
"A little bit.." I lied to him, we were pretty much out in the desert at the moment so it had been unbearably warm "Here" he shrugged his jacket off and came over wrapping it around my shoulders. I put my arms through the holes and wrapped it around me"Come on then" he took my hand in his and locked the Camaro before walking us across the lot to the very busy Diner. He rushed us through the crowd to the only empty booth in the joint. I could see that Billy was tense as his eyes whizzed around the room, like he was trying not to make eye contact with anybody for more than a millisecond. I pulled a menu out of the rack at the end of the table and started looking through "Can I have whatever I want?" I asked him as I looked at the Burger menu"Within reason" he told me. I flicked my eyes up at him

"I mean we don't have to pay for a room anymore if we're sleeping in your Car, soooo" I trailed off and he rolled his eyes at me "Kat..We're on the run. Our faces are all over the news channels. And all you can think about right now is food?" I realised now why Billy was so paranoid. He was right. People would recognise us "I don't think anyone here would know who we are.. There's no TV" A Waitress came over
"What can I get you guys?" she asked and I smiled up at her as Billy looked out of the window. I shook my head "I'll have a Double Cheeseburger please.. Oh and a Lemonade.. Billy?" I questioned "Yeah.. The same" he said not turning away from the window. She noted it down
"I'll be back with it in a fewminutes" Billy turned to me as she sauntered off
"She's probably been working here all day.. She won't know who we are" I informed him reaching over for his hand. He pulled it away and I shrugged out of his jacket now that we were inside. "Yeah she might not have seen us yet, but say she goes home later.. Or what if we're in the papers" I smirked "Kat! Come on. This is serious"
"You're just worried in case you can't get the licence plates off of your car and we have to dump it" his jaw stiffened and he looked mad "Alright.. I get it" I told him "We've just got to try and make it two more days right?" I asked him "Surely they've been looking for us since the day we left... I gave Stacey that letter remember?" he sighed
"Yeah, I remember. Did it say where you were going?" I swallowed
"I just said I was going away with you and that I was safe. That was it" he nodded and the waitress came back over with our Burgers and Drinks placing them in front of us "Enjoy guys" she smiled at Billy and he returned it before picking up his fork and stabbing a fry.

After we'd eaten we headed back out to the Camaro "So what's the plan?" I asked him as he raced ahead,swinging the keys around his finger "We drive and find somewhere safe to pull over" I got into the passenger seat and did my seat belt up. We drove for a couple of miles in silence until Billy pulled over at the side of a dirt track road "We'll be ok here" he told me as he turned the engine off I climbed over to the back seats and pulled the blankets we had out of the foot well "Are you coming back here?" I asked him. He turned to look at me
"No, it's fine you take the back seats I'll stay here" I swallowed
"Alright,Goodnight" I told him as I laid back across the seats and pulled the blanket up around me. I closed my eyes and willed myself to fall asleep.
