Chapter Forty Eight

The next morning we woke up to my bedside alarm clock "Jesus turn it off!" Jen moaned from the floor beside me. I leant over and turned off the alarm sitting up " We have to get up, we have my goodbye brunch at Benny's this morning and before that I need to call my Dad to make sure it's ok for you to stay with us, we need to sort out a flight ticket for you as well" I got out of bed "ughhh.. I thought that was all a dream" Jen groaned "I'm sorry" I told her sympathetically, kneeling down to her "You know you don't have to do this... We can find another way" she sighed "Are you kidding me Kat? You think I'd rather stay in Hawkins, Indiana than spend the entire Summer free in California" she asked bemused "Alright. I guess that's not really a hard choice to make" We got up and Jen hit the shower whilst I went downstairs to see Mom "Hey sweetie, how was last night?" I smiled at her "It was good, Jen stayed here last night. I need to call Dad, is that ok?" I asked heading into the sitting room to find the landline "Yeah of course, is Jen ok?" I nodded as I picked up the phone and dialled Dad's number "Hey princess"
"Dad hey! I have a favour to ask" "Go ahead"
"You know my friend Jennifer? Well, she's having some issues here and I wondered if it would be ok if she stayed with us in California, just for a few weeks over the summer until her dorm is ready at UCLA" I bit my lip awaiting my Dad's reply
"Of course it's ok... Do you need me to sort out a plane ticket for her?"
"Erm... Maybe"
"Look don't worry, I'll sort it with the airline" I smiled
"You're the best!" I told him
"Don't sweat it... Did you want to speak with Billy?" I smiled
"Sure if he's around" My Dad passed the phone over to him
"Hey gorgeous, how was graduation" I smiled at the sound of his voice "Graduation was fine... How's the new life guarding job?" I questioned "Pretty cool babe.. I just hang around the pool all day, shouting at little shitty kids to stop running and diving" I laughed "God, I can't wait to see you later" I told him "Me neither babe. I miss you"
"Ok so there's been a slight change of plan... Jen's coming with me today"
"Jen? How come?" "Jason's back in town... He knows it was me who planted the drugs. He came to Carol's graduation party last night, but we left before he could see us. Jen needs out"
"That fucking asshole.. ok. I'll let you go I have to work in an hour. I'll see you tonight though" I smiled at the thought of seeing him in the flesh again "See you tonight"

"Did you guys see him?" Jen asked as me, Stacey and Steve sat around a table at Benny's with her. The mood was sombre as Stacey had had a raging argument with Josh who was ultimately uninvited today "Yeah, he was looking for both of you. Asked where Kat was first. He's really got it in for you" Steve told us "Anyway, this is supposed to be Kat's leaving day so let's focus on that yeah?" I looked at Jen
"Do you want to tell them?" I asked her "I suppose I'd better" she sighed and looked up at Steve and Stacey "I'm heading out to California tonight too" Stacey widened her eyes "What! Why?" "Because if I stay Jason is going to make my summer a living hell. Kat's Dad has offered me a room at his house until my dorms ready in the fall"
"Seriously?" Stacey asked, tears in her eyes "Hey Stace listen don't get upset.... Steve will be here and you'll make up with Josh!" Jen tried to reassure her "If my Mom can set things straight with Jason and his family then I might even be back here for a few weeks" she nodded but was still on the verge of bawling her eyes out "So let's just enjoy our last few hours here together yeah?" Jen smiled at Stacey and she smiled back wiping at her eyes before the tears ran down her cheeks.
