Chapter Twenty Seven

The next morning when I opened my eyes I noticed that someone was holding my hand. I turned my head slightly to see Steve "Kat?" I groaned as he let go if my hand like he'd been caught doing something he shouldn't have "What are you doing here?" I asked him. I was aching all over "I heard about what happened from Stace so I skipped out on school to come and see you" I sat myself up slightly. The pain was almost unbearable. I pressed the call button on the side of the bed "Did that asshole really do this to you?" I couldn't believe Steve was already throwing out accusations...Never mind the fact that he was here when we hadn't spoken in weeks "No he didn't and he's not an asshole" Steve shook his head at me, his hair flopping about
"If I remember correctly Kat. The day you returned to Hawkins you were crying to me in Jennifer's Kitchen about him.. How does that not make him an asshole?"

"You're the asshole" he smiled at me in response
"So you can forgive Stacey but not me?" I nodded but didn't give him an answer "I really hurt you Kat and I'm sorry. But at least I didn't put you in the hospital and at least I'm here now" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. A nurse came in "Ah Katrina you're awake, how are you feeling?"
"Sore" I told her as she started checking monitors and stuff

"I'm not surprised, I'll go and get you some painkillers.. What do you want for Breakfast?" I sighed "I don't know, toast or something?" I asked her

"I'll get that sorted for you. Your Doctor wants to get you moved upstairs at some point today after he's been in to check on you" I licked over my lips
"How much longer do you think I'll be in here?" I asked her
"I'm not too sure, you'll have to speak to your Doctor about that" she smiled at Steve and then headed out of the room again "She seems nice" Steve stated
"Why are you here Steve?" I asked him
"I just wanted to make sure you were ok?"
"Well as you can see I'm fine" Steve looked saddened
"Don't say I didn't try" he told me before standing up and leaving I rolled my eyes and waited for the Doctor to return.

Moving upstairs wasn't too difficult and I found that the pain wasn't as intense when I moved. The ward was nicer up here, but it was open so there were three other girls in here with me. It was so boring though especially because I had nothing to do and no one came to see me until the evening when Penny and Stacey showed up "I don't understand why I have to stay here" I groaned at Penny "I'm perfectly fine" I told her. She just smiled at me
"Well have you checked with your Doctor?" I parted my lips
"No...He's probably under strict instructions from Hopper or Neil to keep me locked away in here for as long as possible"
"Why would they want to do that?" Penny asked a little astounded by the statement. I realised then that Penny wasn't there when Hopper accused me of trying to run again "Hopper thinks that me and Billy were going on the run again" I told both Penny and Stacey
"You weren't though, right?" Stacey asked looking panicked
"No, of course not!" I defended
"Where were you going anyway?" Penny questioned "You must have been heading somewhere before the accident?" I swallowed

"Billy wanted to run.. he said he was going to drive until he ran out of gas"
"So you were going?" Penny's mood had changed from sympathetic to mad real quick
"No, I was trying to get him to pull over. I don't think he would have gone through with it. He was just really upset and angry at the time" I told her "I promise you guys.. I wouldn't put you through that again" Penny sat back down seeming to believe me
"Billy needs to talk to someone about his Father.. whether that be the police or the school" I nodded but I knew Billy and he was never ever going to speak up about that to anyone. When a Nurse finally appeared Penny asked her when I could go home "We want to keep you in over night tonight, but after that you'll probably be discharged" she told me. Penny grinned
"See...Just one more night" I nodded as she stood up "I'm going to head to the grocery store down the street and grab us all something to eat" she left me and Stacey alone
"Did Steve come and see you?" she asked as soon as the ward door closed
"Yeah.. He did and he was being a dick"
"He saw Billy's car being towed away last night" I swallowed "I bet he's more upset over that car than anything else" she joked "Just... Ignore Steve he's just upset and he'll look for any excuse to hate Billy.. Just like I did"
"I wish I could see him"
"He needs to heal, so do you" I bit my lip. I planned to head off of the ward later tonight when it was quieter to find him.
