Chapter Thirty Three

I actually managed to get some homework done in detention and afterwards I headed to the parking lot to look for Jennifer. I spotted her Car and as I got closer, I noticed that she wasn't alone. I thought maybe she'd bought Jason along with her for the ride but as I squinted I noticed that it wasn't Jason at all... It was Billy. I stopped walking. So this was her 'surprise'. Jennifer rolled her window down before poking her head out "Hurry the hell up, we don't have much time" I walked around to the back door hesitantly and opened it sliding into the car
"What the hell is this?" I questioned
"My thoughts exactly" Billy replied as Jennifer drove us out of the school yard. She rolled her eyes "Don't give me that shit Hargrove. I'm doing this for you" Jenn replied irritated
"What are you talking about? " I questioned Jennifer before looking at the back of Billy's head "I didn't think you wanted to see me again?" I quizzed him
"And you'd be fucking right" he snapped back at me without turning around
"Well. Why were you in Penny's drive way last night begging to see Kat?" Jenn quizzed him
"That was before I found out about Johnathan Byers" I parted my lips as Jenn pulled up outside of my Mom's house "Oh my god.. No.There's nothing going on there Billy" Jennifer laughed "Look both of you get the hell out of my Car. I'll pick you up in an hours time" We both got out and I dug around in my bag for the keys to the place. Billy limped over on his crutches. I located the key and pulled it out unlocking the door and walking inside, Billy followed and closed the door behind him using one of his crutches "What's going on?" I asked him folding my arms across my chest "I wanted to see you last night! But Jenn said you were already asleep. She gave me a pep talk about leaving and I wanted to tell you that I was planning on screwing my Dad over and staying here so that I could spend the last few months with you before you go off to California" I smiled widely "But.. then I found out about you and Byers" I sighed "I didn't think good boys were your type?"
"It's a prank" I assured Billy
"A prank? Why would sucking face with that creep be a prank?" I rolled my eyes
"He's not a creep and he's in love with Nancy and I know she has feelings for him to and I was right. She confronted him after she saw us together" Billy's jaw clenched and unclenched "I was helping him out.. I don't want to date him" I told Billy firmly
"Why are you two even speaking to each other? Actually I don't care, you still made out with him in front of people... You're embarrassing me" I let out a laugh
"embarrassing you?" I questioned "no one saw except for Nancy" I assured him

"But everyone knows about it" I rolled my eyes
"You're being ridiculous Billy"

"When I come back to Hawkins High on Monday. I'm going to make that kids life a living hell" I looked up at him "See you around Kat" he turned away from me and so I ran after him and gave him a shove. Not caring that I could do further damage to his legs or ribs. He turned back to me "You can't keep playing me like this Billy" I told him "You either want to be with me or you don't" he walked back over to me and pressed his lips to the side of my face "I love you" I looked up at him and before he could turn away again I pressed my lips to his holding his cheeks in my hands as his arms slowly wrapped around my waist. The kiss deepened but as soon as it started it stopped "I can't do anything strenuous" he told me with a smile. I stepped away slightly
"So you're really staying?"
"My Dad's taking me to the airport on Monday morning to head to Montana" he told me "But I'm not getting on that plane"
"Does this mean you're going to take up Penny's offer?" I asked hopefully
"No. I was kinda hoping you'd give me the keys to this place" I moved my eyes from Billy and looked around the Kitchen "I can't just let you live here... We'd at least have to go and ask my Mom"
"When Jennifer gets here we'll go see her"
"If we do that Billy we have to be honest with her... We have to tell her about your Dad" I watched his throat as he swallowed "She'll understand more than anyone about what you're going through considering what happened to my Brother and us"
"Can I trust her?" he asked
"She won't say anything" he nodded "You can't go back to Hawkins High on Monday... The school know your Dad's taking you out right?" he shrugged at me
"I don't know and to be honest I don't care. I'll talk to the god damn school myself" a loud Car horn outside made us both turn towards the Kitchen window "It's Jennifer" he told me. I was shocked our hour was up already. We both walked out of the house and Billy went down to the Car as I locked the door behind me "Have you guys sorted everything out?" Jennifer asked us as she started the Car and we both climbed in "Yes" I replied "I mean I think so"
"Are you seeing Jason tonight?" Billy asked Jenn changing the conversation
"Not tonight"
"Do you mind taking us to see Kat's Mom?"
"I suppose so.. Why?" she questioned

"We need to talk to her about something" I butted in "It won't take long I swear and then after we can go to the Diner and I'll buy you a milkshake or a Burger or whatever you want" she smiled "I could really use a Chocolate Milkshake actually so yeah it's a deal" Billy turned around to look at me and I winked at him.

Jennifer pulled up at the facility "I think I'm going to wait in the car, hospital's make me nervous" she flicked the radio on and me and Billy headed inside
"Hello Kat!" the receptionist greeted me "How are you? We haven't seen you in a while" I smiled at her "I've just been really busy" I told her not mentioning that I'd been in a Car accident that I was lucky to have come out alive of "Your Mom's been worried because you haven't stopped by" I nodded as I signed me and Billy in "How did you break your leg?" she suddenly asked looking over at Billy "I fell off my bike" he lied and I wondered if that was what he was telling everybody "Ok, well let me get a nurse to take you down to see Nina"

A nurse appeared sooner or later and took us down to my Mom's room "Hey honey" she wrapped me in a hug "Where have you been?" I smiled at her as she pulled away
"Nowhere, just busy with school work and stuff" she nodded and then looked over at Billy
"Hi Billy, it's nice to see you again, did you break your leg?"
"Hey Ms Carter, yeah I did, I erm, fell off of my bike"
"Please, it's Nina"
"We said no lies" I quickly interrupted there conversation. They both turned to me "The reason we, well I've not been around is because I've been trying to help Billy with something but now I think we need your help" My Mom looked confused as Billy looked anywhere but at her "Billy's Dad can be pretty, violent sometimes" I told her "He just needs somewhere to lay low for a while"
"And what do you expect me to do about it Katrina?" she asked before turning to Billy "have you spoken to the police?" he shook his head
"I'm not talking to the cops about it, they wouldn't believe me anyway" Billy replied, still not looking at her. She let out a sigh "That's what I always said to Kat and Mitch whenever they asked me to call the cops when...." she stopped mid sentence. Like she couldn't continue. "Maybe if I'd have listened to my kids and I'd gone to the police Mitchell's death could have been prevented" her lip quivered. Mom rarely spoke about Mitch's death or Chris. I wrapped my arms around her "It was never your fault Mom, you were scared" she pushed me away and wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her cardigan before holding my hands and looking up at me "We'll talk another time, now what was this favour?" she smiled at me
"Could Billy stay at ours, just until you get home?" she turned to look up at Billy
"I mean I guess that would be ok" I hugged her again
"I'll stop by tomorrow, we can have a proper chat" I told her "I love you" she grinned at me
"I love you too" When we walked into reception to sign out I turned to Billy
"Why don't you head out to Jennifer's car I just want to speak to someone about Mom, I'll sign you out"
"So he's cute" the receptionist noted once Billy was far away enough not to hear I smirked at her
"What? Cuter than Steve?" I questioned her jokingly. Whenever I brought Steve here she never took her eyes off him "Oh hush, way too young for me" she replied,
"I was wondering if I could speak to someone about Mom?" I asked, changing the subject
"Of course, I think maybe Doctor Green is in, he's the main doctor here" I nodded as she grabbed the phone and started dialling a number. I waited leaning my back against the desk until she came back to confirm he was on his way. "Hi I'm doctor Green, you must be Katrina Carter?" I smiled "Did you want to come down to my office to talk?" I hesitated because I didn't want to keep Jennifer and Billy waiting but it was probably best, considering what we were discussing could be confidential "So what can I do for you?" he asked as I sat at the desk opposite him
"I just wanted to know how my Mom is doing? I know she told me a while ago it wouldn't be long until she's home?" he nodded

"Your Mom has been doing really well, she's clean and she's been progressing in her therapy sessions and in group therapy"
"Is there any chance that I'd be able to attend one of her sessions?" I questioned
"We can't let you into group or her one on one sessions but we do have family therapy if it's needed?" he asked me
"Me and Mom haven't really spoken properly to each other in three years" I told him "Today she kind of opened up to me"
"And you want to expand on that?" I nodded
"I got the impression today that she wants to too"
"I'll speak to Nina and we can try and fit something like that into her schedule" I nodded "Are you stopping by again this week?" he asked
"I was going to come alone tomorrow, see if we could talk then?"
"That's great, I'll see you the same time tomorrow then?" I agreed and stood up shaking his hand

When I walked back to the Car Jennifer and Billy were both lent against it smoking "Sorry for making you wait so long Jenn"
"No sweat, I've got nowhere else to be and it'll be worth it once I get this Milkshake" she opened up the car door and got in.
