“You’re gonna catch cold from the ice inside your soul.”
~Christina Perri (Jar of hearts)
“I get that your hands were tied, but a fucking six months deal?! You are in a six months contract with that devil?” Hadid asks over Skype and I bite down on my lips.
It’s been four days since we last talked, and that was before Mom hit and run. Even I can’t believe the many things that have happened since we last talked.
I emailed him my part of the contract which Noah drafted and made me sign so he could read and help me understand everything written there. Hadid is a law student, and I knew he’d be honest and not hide or judge me with whatever he discovers.
I had narrated everything that had happened in the last four days to him after he demanded what the files he’d read for the past four hours were, so he could have more clarity, and just like I predicted, he disapproved. There is not much he can do about my decision because he is a million miles away and as much as I’d take his advice, he can’t tell me what to do.
I have not even completed the entire ordeal, which involved Luke and me getting intimate. I don’t know how he’ll take it either.
“Do you even know how long that is and how bad it can get?” He asks in a scolding tone of voice, and I can’t blame him. If he’d made a deal with an evil woman, I’ll be pissed and worried as hell too.
“A few good things came from this though,” I counter, trying to reason with him, “mom’s alive and okay because of this deal and I will not have to put my schooling on hold even though I lost my chance at the scholarship because he’s paying the fees. I also don’t have to take up many jobs anymore. One is okay, and I’ve got more time to study.”
“No matter what you get from him, he wins. He gets what he wants, control. That’s what men who make these types of contract wants: total control. He owns you honey and he can do whatever he likes with you and no one can do or stop him because you agreed and signed to these sick terms he wrote.”
“I had no choice Ad, you were not here. Mom was going to die if I didn’t do something!” I know what I’ve gotten myself into, and I know it will not get better, so I was only going to get ready.
“I know you, you won’t be able to live with this, you’re a wolf Avril, you can’t be tamed and you’re going to break this deal and when you do, he’s going to make you pay.”
He is right, a part of me already wants to end this deal and break free, a part of me wishes I had never signed those papers that morning and if I’m being honest, then I’d have to admit that I’ve broken the deal we made when I was intimate with Luke and now all I can do is hope on the feeling he has for me and not rat me out to Noah.
“Then it’s best to not break it then.” I mumble so low to myself, I’m not sure he hears me. “When are you coming back?” I ask, changing the topic.
“Mom’s funeral was yesterday,” a little pain remains on his face and voice as he says, “I’ll be there by the weekend.”
“That is like two more days!” I squeal like a little child in front of a candy shop.
He flashes me a genuine smile before saying, “I can’t wait to see you too, love.”
My phone rings, and I pick it up from the bed. My heartbeat increases when I see the ID is Noah.
Ad must have seen the sudden change in my expression cause he speaks up, bringing me to the awareness of his presence.
“It’s Noah, isn’t it?”
I glance up at the laptop and I know there’s no need to lie or try to deny it, so I nod. “Yeah, I’ve got to go. Talk later.” I said, before turning off my laptop and picking up the call.
