“What are we doing here?” Japhia asks as I ask him to stop the car immediately when I see a feminine store at the end of the road.
I chew on my bottom lips. “My period is probably around the corner. I will need to get sanitary materials for it.” I answer and I just told him a lie, which makes me feel horrible, but I know that’s way better than telling him what I’m hoping to get here.
I get down from the car and close the door to the bend to look at him.
“Will you take long? If yes, do you need me to come with you?” His enquiries, peeping at me from the window.
I smile. Luke Castillo is not the only charming one in the family. Japhia got hung of that as well. “No, I’ll be fine,” I assure him with certainty in my voice before leaving.
Once inside the large store, I approach the middle-aged woman with red-grey hair and medicated glasses standing behind the counter in the store.
“Good morning.” I greet, trying to conceal my red face from her attention with both my hoodie and right hand.
Her smile is so warm and friendly that I almost wonder if we have met before. “Good morning to you too, dear. How may I help you?”
“Can you point me to the corner of the home pregnancy test kits, ma’am?” I ask.
She nodded formally, “Sure, and you can call me Monique. It’s in the last section when you go down the hall to your left.”
“Thanks, Monique.”
I follow her directions and though the store is wide and filled with various feminine items and stores, I still find my way through to meet varieties of pregnancy kits where she said they would be. I picked one and head back to the woman at the counter. I pay and I am about to walk out when I stop and turn to her.
“I don’t want to ask too much, but I do not know how this works.”
There’s much patience and understanding on her face before she answers, “It’s quite simple, you just have to pee into the cup and then dip the stick in it. There’s a full instruction in the kit, but I can still put you through.”
“No, I think I’ve got it,” I answer, but I still don’t go anywhere.
“Anything else?” She curiously asks.
“Can I use your bathroom?”
“Sure, it’s just down the hall to your right.” She points in that direction and my eyes follow before I nod at her.
I walk down and I see the bathroom sign on the door. I enter and pull down my panties and sit down on the toilet. Normally, I’m the type that will freak and worry about germs and infections in the public toilet, but here I am not having the time to worry about it.
Six months ago I was still a virgin, hoping to get a degree in economics and then get a good job and a good boyfriend, but here I am today, peeing into a cup to check if I’m pregnant by a psycho or not.
I feel like crying again, but I blink the tears back in and skimmed the instructions, just like the pleasant woman at the counter called Monique had directed.
I dipped the stick in the cup and raise it to look at it. My life cannot be better, but it can get worse if it’s positive.
I get up, wash my hands and make my way out of the bathroom, hoping to meet Monique and have her explain the sign on the stick to me when I see Japhia standing in front of the bathroom door.
