I bite down on my bottom lip as I twirl my thumbs repeatedly. The car jerks gently, causing my body to hit against the door and I look up. I meet a pair of brown eyes in the rearview mirror, crinkling on the edges.
"Sorry!" Eliza apologizes as she replaces her hands on the wheel, smiling at me nervously. "My hands are really sweaty," she states honestly.
I look back down at my thumbs, my brows furrowing as she turns up the music to fill the noise. My eyes flicker over to the window and I tilt my head back against the headrest. We pass by rows of trees quickly and I try to focus on one tree before it passes and I have to move to the next.
My aunt Eliza and I are currently on our way to Violet Woods, her hometown where she lives with her husband, David, and their daughter, Charlie. After what had happened with my dad and Jessie, I woke up in the hospital four days later. The cops told me that there weren't any fingerprints one either one of the knives that thing used to kill them. They didn't find anything.
When I woke up, I didn't find a pair of bright blue eyes. I just found brown ones that were trying the best to send me warm vibes. Eliza told me that she was going to try her hardest to get custody of me so that I didn't have to become a foster child at sixteen.
And that's exactly what happened.
Just a month later we were packing up my dad's apartment. David and Charlie stayed back in Violet Hills since Charlie was in school and David has work. As we sit in the car together everything is quiet. She doesn't say anything, probably too scared that I'll blow up on her or something.
I haven't really taken to anyone since. Every time I try to talk to someone, somehow all I see is that shadow. His words repeating over and over in my head ever since I woke up.
I glance up at Eliza when she coughs abruptly, leaning up and back in her seat. "Charlie is really excited that you're moving in with us, y'know?" She smiles at me.
I nod slowly, my eyes flickering back out the window when something catches my eye. I stare wide-eyed at the large, wooden sign that reads:
VIOLET WOODS
My eyes move back to her and she continues smiling at me. "She even told all of her friends that her favorite cousin is coming to live with her. Told them that you'd take care of all her bullies." She chuckles.
"Hm," I hum softly as I look back down at my hands.
She sighs softly at my response. "Do you want something to eat?" She asks as I begin twirling my thumbs again. I shake my head slowly, knowing that she's watching me. "Okay. Maybe some ice cream? Everybody loves ice cream."
"No, thank you." I shake my head.
"Alright." She nods.
The rest of the ride is silent after she realizes I'm not going to contribute to the conversation. After another twenty minutes, the car slows down and I look back up to see Eliza pulling into a small driveway. I stare up at the two-story house, all brick except for the dark brown roof. The front yard is as perfect as the last time I saw it, flowers growing in the garden under the shutters that open up to the living room.
I step out of the car, Eliza already at the back opening the trunk. I round the car before she hands me two boxes with a small smile on her lips. After she grabs a couple of boxes on her own I follow her to the house and wait as she unlocks the front door. Once it's open, she nods for me to go inside and I do.
My eyes instantly roam over everything as I walk inside. The first thing I see when I come inside is a large spiral staircase, surrounding upwards as a lovely chandelier hangs down above my head. To my left is the dining room; a dark brown wood table with six chairs pushed up under it. To my right is the living room; three large light brown couches pressed against each wall with a glass coffee table sitting in the middle. Up on the far wall is a flat screen TV above a small dresser with a flower vase sitting on top.
