ALAINA'S POV
Gabby, Carson, and I all sit in Carson's car, on our way to the diner; the only place we could think of that gave us privacy and also because I mentioned seeing Noah's wolf there.
"All four of you are werewolves?" I repeat from the backseat as Gabby types away on her phone.
"Yes, me, Ax, Liam, and Noah," she confirms with a small nod. "You knew about us before the fire, but when Margo broke the chord that connected you and Noah, it took away all of your memories of him."
"I don't understand how that has to do with anything about knowing that you guys are werewolves," Carson interjects and Gabby places her phone in her lap before turning to look at the two of us.
"A week after Alaina arrived in Violet Woods, I convinced her introverted ass to go to a party with me and I ended up getting drunk, so she wandered off by herself. My ex-werewolf-friend, Mick, who is now dead, courtesy of my dead friend, Liam, found Alaina and bit her."
My eyes widen at her statement, but she isn't finished. "Noah found you and got Mick to stop, and that's how you found out that we're werewolves..." She trails off, a look of sadness in her eyes. "And that's also how you tied yourself to Noah."
"Okay, what does that even mean?" I ask curiously.
"Oh, I can answer that." Carson smiles and glances at me through the rear view mirror. "Okay, so, you're being preyed on by De Umbra," she looks over at Gabby, "the shadow creature," she rephrases and Gabby rolls her eyes. "And the bond between you two is called a chord. It's how she visits you in your dreams or how she screws with your head."
"Like when we were at the diner," Gabby whispers to me and my brows raise.
"And since you were so terrified of De Umbra, you accidentally tied yourself to Noah when he protected you," she gestures to Gabby, reminding us of the story she told about Noah protecting me from guy named Mick. "That, Alaina, is called-"
"Sheltering," Gabby interrupts and Carson glares at her, and Gabby smiles back evilly.
"Knock it off," I demand.
"And so then you guys were tied together, and that messes with De Umbra's magic. And I believe that she possessed your friends and that's what caused them to break your chord."
My brows furrow as I stare down at my lap, trying my hardest to remember that night. Everything is really blurred together and the only thing that I can remember is purple flames.
Suddenly, I hear two words that I remember Karly saying to me before the fire started.
"What's a 'high priestess'?" I ask, and like this morning, the entire car jerks into the other lane before swerving all over the road. "Carson!" I shout and she quickly pulls back into the right lane.
"How do you know that?" She asks me with wide eyes, looking back at me multiple times as Gabby and I grip our chest to make sure our hearts are still beating.
"I just remember Karly saying that. She said it before the fire. She said something like 'hail the high priestess'," I tell her with drawn brows.
"What's a high priestess?" Gabby asks.
Carson blows out a breath and turns back to face the road. "High priestesses are witches of the old religion. The real sacred ones that set orders into place."
"I thought they were all dead," Gabby mumbles.
"De Umbra is the last one, but she's not even a witch anymore. The last one died a couple years ago, about five years ago, I think."
