ALAINA'S POV

"Happy November!" I smile widely at Gabby as I climb into her car Saturday morning. She doesn't smile in return, or say anything back to me. My brows draw together at her silence, but I decide that it might be best for me to just leave it alone.

"So, where are we going to breakfast?" I ask softly as she pulls out of my driveway.

"School's canceled on Monday." She informs me and I continue gazing at her in confusion. "Because of the fire."

"The fire," I whisper, realizing that she wants to talk about last night and what happened.

"Yeah, the fire. The fire you started. The fire that killed Margo, Zeke, and Karly."

My eyes widen at her statement and she glances over at me with not a single ounce of amusement. "What happened, Alaina? And don't leave out a single detail."

I stifle a laugh as I stare at her, but her face doesn't change. "Not even a 'good morning, Alaina' or 'how are you? Did the smoke in your lungs clear?'?" I raise a brow at her.

"I'm not going for niceness right now, Alaina." She tells me honestly. "You killed three people last night, three people I've known my entire life. So you're going to fucking tell me what happened." She demands angrily and my eyes soften.

"It's blurry," I say softly and her brow twitches. "There's some things that I don't remember. But...I remember I left Moose to go find something...and I was hit in the head," I claim as I touch my head subconsciously. "And when I woke up, I was tied to a chair. And I saw Margo and Karly and Zeke. I don't remember what they were saying...but..." I sigh softly as I look down at my lap. "I remember Margo doing something to me and it was painful," I whisper, my voice barley audible, "the worst pain I've ever experienced in my entire life."

"Alaina, do you know what a chord is?" She asks suddenly and I look up at her.

"No."

She nods slowly as she stares at the road. "Alaina?"

"Yeah..?" I furrow my brows at her.

"When is the last time you saw the shadow?" She hums and I feel my eyes widen as my entire body goes cold.

"What?" I choke and she glances over at me swiftly.

"The shadow. When is the last time you saw it?"

I suck in a harsh breath as I look around the car, "Why are you asking me about it?"

"Answer my question." She demands in a low voice and my heart begins beating rapidly in my chest. "I'm trying to figure some stuff out," she says honestly and I look over at her, "and I just need you to answer my questions."

I nod slowly as I bite on my bottom lip. "Last night," I state and the car jerks to the side. My head snaps towards her instantly and she shakily steers back into the center of the lane.

"Last night?!" She repeats, looking at me with wide eyes.

"In the haunted house."

"What..." She says, out of breath.

"It attacked me, but I'm fine now."

"What do you mean by that? Attacked you?" She furrows her brows at me as she continues driving.

"Uh, it just...when I'm with the shadow, it's just me and it. We're always alone. And whenever its near me, it always finds a way to cause me pain. Like the time I was in the bathroom at the diner, it cut the back of my neck," I say and she nods slowly.
