ALAINA'S POV

"She wants to kill me in order to transform back into her real self?" My brows furrow and I take another sip of the coffee. "The killing me part doesn't surprise me since she killed my family, but what I don't get is...why me?"

"You must have some sort of connection to her," Carson states as she shakes her head slowly. "But that doesn't matter at the moment, what does matter is keeping you safe from her."

"Well, I don't really feel that safe anymore," I say without putting any thought into my words.

Carson's brow raise, "Anymore?"

"Huh?" I glance up at her in confusion.

"You said that you don't feel safe anymore. So, you've felt safe from De Umbra before?"

My eyes flicker down to the cup of coffee sitting in front of me and I frown. "I don't remember...I think I did. A while ago I felt safe...but ever since..." I trail off, trying to remember something but I don't know what I'm supposed to be remembering.

"Ever since what, Alaina?" She asks, trying to understand.

I let out a breath before scratching the side of my head. "Ever since Friday. I feel like...I feel like I lost something that night. I think I lost something in the fire, but I don't know what," I say as I shake head.

Carson frowns at me as she pours more coffee into my cup. "Hopefully, you remember it soon."

"What do you mean?" I look back up at her.

"That poison in your veins is from De Umbra, Alaina," she reminds me, gesturing to my coveted arms. "When it's complete, she'll come for you and you'll be gone."

"So, what are you saying?"

"I'm saying that whatever it is that you had that made you feel protected, you need to find it. Maybe, then just maybe, you'll stay alive." She smiles at me genuinely and I glance down at my hands.

"Here, take off your shirt and let me see them," she suggests and I look at her with wide eyes. "Oh, come on, you prude. I'm here to help you, not take advantage of you." She rolls her eyes at me.

"I don't know..." I mumble.

She sighs softly, "Alaina, I'm the only one who's going to help you because I'm the only person you know that knows anything about De Umbra. Do you have any other friends that are witches?" Her brow raises.

"No," I say softly as I shake my head.

"Then take my help."

I bite down on my bottom lip as my body trembles nervously. "Okay," I grumble before slowly pulling my damp shirt over my head, leaving me in a dark blue bra and my jeans.

Carson walks around the counter and begins examining my back. Her warm fingers cause me to jerk forward and she quietly apologizes as she traces them up to my shoulder blades and the nape of my neck.

She walks around me examines my chest and torso, her warm fingers poking the veins running over my skin. Her eyes graze over me, and stop abruptly on my clear arms. She takes my arms in her warm hands, staring at my pale skin in confusion.

"What is this?" She asks, her dark eyes meeting mine.

"Oh, that," I whisper. "Yeah...I wasn't in the woods for a hike," I confess.

"What were you doing then?" She asks as her finger skims over my skin and I notice her eyes widen at the white scars.

"Earlier today Gabby and I were here for lunch and I saw a wolf out in the trees," I state and her eyes meet mine. "And when I looked at it, it stared back at me and the pain was gone.
