🎧: The Night Is Calling by WeathersChapter 3- The Figure by the Lamp Post
I ran away from there as fast as possible. Night had fallen already and I was forced to walk to the orphanage. They say this town is safe but I'm not sure, for death surrounds me and only another can bring it upon me, unless I count killing oneself, which, although I am extremely miserable, will not see myself doing anytime soon.
My pace had slowed and I found myself being guided by the street lamps. I've always been drawn to dark things but I never said I wasn't terrified of them. Sometimes, I feel as if the shadows call me to lurk in them. To hide in them from the much more dangerous things in the world. At moments, I indulge in the darkness as if it were my only escape. The only place where I am not judged and relegated, but respected. A flickering street lamp caught my attention and an appalling feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. I'm not alone. I saw a figure standing close by, judging by his bulky physique, which was outlined by the dim light, I could tell it was a man. I halted in my tracks, not daring to take one more step. I sucked in a deep breath and held my necklace, feeling it could protect me. I fluttered my eyes open once again to be met with an empty street. I looked again to where the figure once stood, nonetheless he was gone, not a trace lingered.
A sudden bolt of lightning struck and I took off running to the orphanage. I ran and ran until the rather large wooden house was in sight. In the glimmer of the morning sun it seemed warm and welcoming, but at nightfall, it sent chills down my spine. The dainty moonlight illuminated only parts of the house and the trees looked much larger, serving as magnets to the evil creatures that loiter in the night.
I entered the orphanage and heard fire crackling in the Grand Hall. The Grand Hall is where we chat or sit to read and watch television. This place has about 60 orphans and it's a pretty nice place, nothing wretched like how they usually portray an orphanage in movies. Everyone here is so nice and loving, they truly feel like family.
I entered the Grand Hall and saw Henry sitting by the fire staring low- spiritedly at the building blocks he got for Christmas last year. "Well hello Henry!" I cheerfully exclaimed. Henry diverted his attention from the building blocks and the moment he saw me, he ran and hugged me, well hugged my leg seeing as he's so small. I lowered myself to his level and hugged him. "What are you still doing up?! You're supposed to be in your bedroom with Levi and Remi." I scolded. "Well, Sister Elizabeth and Sister Mary told me to go to the Great Hall because there was something wrong with Levi and Remi." He replied while looking at his feet, wearing a sad expression. "What happened to them?" I asked suspiciously, somehow feeling it was really bad. "I don't really know. They wouldn't let me see them, but they probably fought over the race car again." He stared innocently at me while explaining. "Okay, kid. Stay here, I'll call Sister Amara to stay with you." I told Henry. "Sister Amara!" My voice echoed through the walls of the house and soon enough I heard her scurrying steps.
"Yes, Thana? Is everything okay?" She said while heavily breathing. "Yes all is well, Sister. It's just I need you to please stay with Henry because he is feeling down and I must get a good nights rest because I have school tomorrow." I told her and my eyes held a pleading look. "I understand." She nodded and I mouthed a 'thank you' to her.
I hurried up the stair steps to Henry's room and tiptoed through the hallway. I noticed light coming from his room. I stood behind the door, close enough to hear the hushed conversation between Sister Elizabeth and Sister Mary. "They are in shock, sister." Sister Elizabeth told Mary. "They must've seen..." Sister Mary couldn't finish the sentence. "The orphanage is not safe anymore. We were warned when she came here. We even got a witch to secure the place! How could this have happened?" Sister Elizabeth's voice seemed full of concern. "I'm afraid they have found a way around the spell. We must contact Maeva straight away. I hope she hasn't said anything to poor Thana yet. She mentioned something about giving her a glimpse into her future life." Sister Mary replied. "I will go to town and fetch her. Let's hope this doesn't draw attention to the orphanage. We'd fall into deep trouble. Oh, before I forget, where shall Henry sleep tonight?" Sister Elizabeth asked.
"I'm afraid he is safest with Thana. She has a spell on her and his protection no doubt." She stressed on 'his' in a disgusted manner.
Whose protection? What the hell is happening? I heard foot steps growing closer and I scurried away from the door and ran downstairs. Spells, children in shock, witches, and a mysterious 'him' that is providing me protection. Catholic Orphanage... sure. However, could this 'him' be the figure by the lamp post?
