🎧: Heavy Soul by You Me At SixChapter 4- Goddess of Death
The wind had picked up during the night and by morning a storm was evidently brewing outside. For the past 11 days, Henry had slept next to me. He was such a beautiful child, how could his mother leave him here? I stared at his angelic face as he slept and later leaving the room.
I grabbed my bag and coat then hastily reached for a granola bar from the kitchen countertop. The clouds ominously lurked in the morning sky, thereby blocking any ray of sun, so I decided on taking an umbrella with me. I walked down the crooked path making my way yet again to the hell we civilians know as school. Halloween is tomorrow and the orphanage always holds a charity event where all the money being donated will go to our care.
The old red bricked building came into sight and the obnoxious sign stood on the great lawn. 'Walden Public High School'
A place for all... Yes, definitely a place for the vile rich idiots of this school. You see, everyone in town goes to this school because the closest school besides this one was 3 hours away. So you could imagine how many students reside to this abyss. Our town is one that rarely filled with poor people or even middle class people. It is mostly composed of snobby multi-millionaires and their children, hence the posh events are always happening here. The middle-classers aren't all that normal as well, they would be considered the superior middle-classers where they would have at least $500K+ in their bank accounts.
Plainly and simply I would tell you, if you don't have dough then you are picked on, bullied and literally dragged through hell. Every year, they would beat me, emotionally abuse me and send me into the deepest despair-filled hole they can find, and at the Halloween Ball, they would smile to the cameras and donate money, acting like they care when they only do it solely for their reputation.
Anger is building up inside me and a fire has been burning in my heart for years. I want relief, I just want peace. Sometimes, I can't help but notice that there is a deep darkness within me. I feel the evil deep in my soul but there is also an equivalent good in there too. It's so confusing that I can't keep track of it. The thing I feel deeply is the dark side of me being trapped in a cage and stowed away so deep, that I can't reach it.
The indistinct chatter in the hallway came to an end when I walked through the door. They all gave me disgusted looks. Why do they even hate me so much? Anger boiled up inside me when I saw the clique of jocks and cheerleaders staring at me intently. The gave each other a knowing look, as if confirming an agreement or something along the likes of one.
Something inside me knew that today wasn't going to be all that good, but there was a different feeling in there too. An accident will happen but I will succeed in something. I carried on walking until I reached my AP English Class.
I sat at the back of the class as the teacher walked in. She was a middle-aged black haired woman. Mrs. Carter was very odd and sometimes whispered to herself. Nonetheless, she was a brilliant teacher. "Settle down, class." She said and we all fell into silence. "I presume none of you read what I had assigned for the weekend?" She retorted. Her eyes bore into mine. "Well, of course. All of you except for Thana." She smiled. I stared down at my hands. Why'd she have to do that?!
"Why in the hell would someone name their child Thana?" Emily stated in disgust. Emily was one of the cheerleaders and I tell you she is a grade A- Bitch. The only A she'll ever score.
"Excuse me, Emily. Don't you know what 'Thana' means?!" Mrs. Carter exclaimed. I didn't even know my name had a meaning to begin with. "Thana is a greek female name, derived from 'Thanatos', the god of death. Which, despite the frightening implication, it has an alluring sense. This actually makes Thana, a goddess of death." She explained. The whole class had their mouths gaped open and so did I. I looked at Emily and rage filled me up.
"Now tell me, Emily. Is that a bland name? Would you not give your daughter a name resembling power?" I argued. Where the hell did all this rage come from? Since when do I speak like that? What even. Emily glared at me and then looked at the rest of her clique. I looked at one of the jocks who goes by the name of Jayden. 'You'll pay.' He mouthed to me with a vengeful expression. Just peachy! I have these dickheads on schedule for today. I'll just squeeze 'getting killed' between maths and chemistry. No biggie.
"Moving on. Thana, would you care to explain the title of the book?" Mrs. Carter pressed. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. " Holden, the protagonist of the story, feels that it is his duty to catch the children who will 'fall' from the rye. This is a type of inner struggle he faces, the tumble from the rye symbolizes the fall from innocence and he feels the need to prevent that. He did not want them to become what he was." I said. The whole class groaned and I heard some 'know it all' phrases in there but I felt proud and in control. The weirdest part is that I wasn't phased at all.
