Chapter 8- Ruler of Hell

It was Saturday morning. The weather showed no signs of mercy. The clouds were darker than I've ever seen. Almost suffocating. As I draw a frigid breath, I think things. Things I regret. I seem to have lost familiarity with everything. Nothing feels the same anymore, nor tastes. I read of Lucifer and his demons and I couldn't help but feel a connection. I cried at the mention of the fall, I cried at the details of his agony when I am not the devil's sympathizer. I believe in god, unmistakably and obey only god. However, a mischievous part of me wants to know more about the devil, taking an intrigue to him.

I think again of the children who have been kissed by evil. The children who are searching of a pith fork. How can I help them? If I have this 'someone's protection', could I tell the sisters and stay with the children in order for them to be protected?

My mind races back to my studies. The story of Lucifer. A noble angel he was, extremely pure, but inside him an undeniable spark of mischief ignited. He was unlike any other angel, his pride was deadly. It came to the point where he wanted to replace god. He burningly desired to become god. He was prideful to the extent where he would not love anyone but himself.

But many historic banters occurred on how Lucifer really fell from heaven. Some say, Lucifer fell before Adam and Eve resided in the Garden of Eden and there are some that say otherwise.

Sister Elizabeth interrupted my chain of thought. "Thana? Dear, would you like to have tea with me?"

"Yes, of course." I smiled warmly and sat down on the couch. "You seem a bit distracted." She said as she sat on the armchair opposite of me. "Sister, there's something I've been meaning to tell you..." I started to say. I can't continue, I'll hurt the children. "I- I don't uh want to get adopted." I settled on another thing. "My, dear. I know you're not ready for something new, but this is something good for you. They are nice people with perfectly good standards." She argued.

I stared at her. Do I tell her that they're not all that she thinks they are? Do I tell her that they are wretched? But maybe I only saw them that way because I didn't want them to adopt me. I stayed silent and sipped my tea. "They are coming here on Monday and they will officially be your parents." She exclaimed happily. "I'm going to my room to pack then." I told her and stood up to leave. "We'll miss you a lot, my loveliest girl." Sister Elizabeth said and a single tear left my cheek. As I walked to the door, I heard her whisper "God guide you through the horrors you'll see when you meet him. Dear lord protect this child." She chocked by the end of the sentence. At this point, I don't care anymore.

I hadn't realized I dosed off until a deafening scream woke me up. My was a mess and I was sweating like crazy. I looked at the clock and saw it was 3:00am. What's happening? I ran in a distressed manner to the source of screams. I found the sisters running towards Henry's room. Oh no... I pushed my way through the sisters until I found Henry passed out on the floor. "HENRY!" I screamed in the loudest voice I managed. I started sobbing hysterically while sitting at his side. "Please be okay. Please god, protect him." I sobbed even more. "SISTER ELIZABETH! PLEASE HELP HIM! CALL MAEVA! CALL ANYONE!" I cried further.

"Calm down, Thana. It's going to be okay." She soothed. "NO ITS NOT. It's all my fault. I should have told you. WHERE ARE THOSE DEMONIC CHILDREN!" I screamed. "You what? Sister Mary! I'm taking her to the office to have a chat." Sister Elizabeth mentioned. "I won't leave him!" I hugged Henry's limp body but the nurses took him away from me. I stayed glued to the floor staring as they carried him away. "Let's go." Sister Elizabeth said as she lifted me up and took me to the office.

With a cup of tea in my hands, and my shivering frame wrapped in a blanket, I started telling Sister Elizabeth all that happened. "I-I was with Henry in the library yesterday. He started telling me that his roommates have been a-acting weird and they were looking for a p-pitchfork and if they told one of the sisters, he would hurt them." I blurted, shivering. "That's peculiar. I don't think they have told any of the sisters, unless..." she trailed off and shot up from her seat quickly. She ran to the monitor at the wall and starting pressing the screen in a haste.

"What are you doing?" I asked her. "Rewinding back to see Henry's whereabouts." She replied, not removing her eyes off the screen. I stared at the monitor as well until Henry shown clearly. "There he is!" I exclaimed. He was talking to Sister Clara. She was a new addition to the orphanage. He was coloring in the corner before she came and sat next to him. They seemed to be having a conversation.

A few minutes into the conversation, Henry started crying and she held him. Her eyes gave a blood red color and she hit Henry on the head with a book on his side. I screamed. She then turned to the camera and mouthed to the screen. You didn't need to enable the audio to know what she said. The single sentence disgusted me and gave me infinite chills of guilt. 'Give us Thana'.

I ran to my bedroom and started throwing things everywhere. "It's all my fault! IT'S ALL MY FAULT! WHERE IS SHE?!" I yelled and trashed the room even more. Someone came barging in to my room and hugged me from behind. They were small I can sense it. I turned around and saw Henry with a bandage wrapped around his head.

"I'm so sorry." I whispered and hugged him. Sister Mary followed him into the room. "You shouldn't be out of bed, Henry. You haven't recovered yet." She scolded. "Can he stay with me tonight?" I asked her in a small voice. "I don't know..." she answered. "Please, Sister." Henry begged. "Fine, but go to sleep immediately." She smiled and left the room. "It's not your fault, T." He said. "Shh. I love you." I told him. "I love you too." He said and hugged me. I tucked him in bed and by the time I was done it was 4:30am. I sighed to myself.

Third person POV

Sister Mary walked through the empty dark halls. The moonlight illuminated the path to her office, where all the sisters were gathered. As she walked in their dull faces lit up. "Sister Clara was found dead in the North Wing." She said in despair. The whole room filled with gasps. "The place is not safe anymore. I'm afraid, it's time to send Thana back." Sister Rona interfered. They all knew she was right. "It was an order by an angel that she stay here until the time was right!" Sister Elizabeth argued. "God almighty believes there is good in her. She is the most powerful and the only Hybrid at that. A hybrid of good and evil... She is the tipper of the scale. Till now the scale is at balance, but if she were to fall in the wrong hands, we are doomed." Sister Fauna added.

"We must send her back to her father." Sister Mary said disgustedly. They all knew that she did not deserve a father as cruel, they all knew her soul is too pure to be tainted by his sinister blood. They couldn't have imagined that a soul so sweet could come from such poisonous roots. "B-but it's too early! She should have stayed here until she was 21! She isn't ready." Sister Elizabeth took a firm stand. "The children are getting hurt. They are entangled in things much larger than they can comprehend. Things they think only exist in stories and myths. They will understand. He must understand." Sister Mary replied. The room fell into insufferable silence, the only intruders were the children of the night. Howling and screaming.

While back in her room, the wind howled mercilessly as she stood in the darkness. She didn't know, but little by little her soul shall be ripped away. Little by little, her sorrowful night shall turn into melancholy day. She hums a melodious yet woeful tune, she hums as despair consumes her. A momentary lapse of silence descends upon her, and she is left staring into oblivion.
