Chapter 6- Couple of Lunatics
Today is the day I'm supposed to meet the couple that want to adopt me. I took a quick shower and got dressed in a pair of black pants and a shirt that had 'The Rolling Stones' on it. I pulled my hair up in a bun and decided it was time to go downstairs.
The place was unusually quiet today. Not a single soul roamed the dull halls. I ended up in the great hall staring at the fireplace. Suddenly, a shadow crossed in front of me and I let out an ear-splitting shriek. I frantically looked around me, but a particular portrait caught my eyes. It was horrifying. Like nothing I've seen before. There were bodies scattered all around, it seemed as if it were the aftermath of war. Men with white angel wings stood above them, soaring in the eerie sky, but seemed to be engaged in a war themselves, opposing them was a group of men with black angel wings. The sky was a fiery red and a blood moon shone evidently.
Two words were scribbled in cursive under the painting. 'The Fall'. A shudder flooded through me. I noticed a man, falling from the moon. My heart leaped from my chest. His whole attire seemed dirty and torn. But this single man made my heart tug. My hand reached to touch the painting, but I was interrupted by a cough.
I quickly removed my hand and turned to face two people. "Hello." The woman said. "Hi." I replied awkwardly. "You must be Thana. I'm Olivia and this is my husband Roden." She said again. I looked at the man and nodded. "We're here to get to know you more." The man said. He had salt and pepper hair, he towered at almost 6" and his wife had short auburn hair. She had a slim frame and was extremely short relative to her husband. Something was off about them, I could sense it.
"Would you like to go out for ice-cream?" She bubbled. "Sure." I replied and reluctantly followed them out the door. We walked around town and bought ice cream. They cracked a few jokes and I fake laughed a bit, I felt uneasiness in my stomach the whole way. It was sickening. "Tell us about your friends, Thana." He asked out of the blue.
Roden is really getting on my nerves. This man wants to pry his way into everything and doesn't take no for an answer. "We'd like to know more about our future daughter's social life" He pressed on further. Daughter? Is he kidding me? The way he said daughter brought me disgust and it was evident on my features. Olivia gave him a glare and he just grumbled. I'm beginning to dislike this couple more and more with every passing second.
"Can we return back to the orphanage, now?" I asked them. "Of course." Olivia replied and we headed back. The way there was silent. We hadn't exchanged any words. When we reached the foyer we parted ways, they went to Sister Mary's Office and I was supposed to head back to the room, however, I chose otherwise. After I ensured that the 'couple of lunatics' had safely entered Sister Mary's office, I followed them and stood behind the door to have a better listen on the conversation.
"We absolutely loved, Thana." Olivia gushed. I could sense her fakeness right away. Imbecile. "We really did." Roden added. Yeah, right. He didn't seem like someone lit the fuse to his tampon at all when were together. Cue eye roll. "When can we sign the foster papers?" Olivia rushed. Wait, hold up. I don't want her to adopt me! "Monday if you'd like. We'll have the papers ready." Sister Mary told them and her voice held such enthusiasm. Monday?! Today's Thursday!
I'm not ready to leave this place. I've had enough of this conversation to last me a lifetime. I retreated slowly and with the guidance of dimly lit candles, I arrived to my room. Henry was taken back to his room yesterday so today I'm all alone. Just me and my toxic thoughts, waiting for a miracle to save me from those two nut jobs.
I sighed to myself and walked to the closet. As I opened it, a gust of harsh wind blew in the room. The crystals dangling from the chandelier hit against each other, creating a chilling symphony as they did. I caught a glimpse of the old box. I clutched it quickly and ran to the door to lock it. I walked back to my bed examining it.
I looked at the place where the key is supposed to go. It looks so familiar. I stared at it a bit more and an out of the bounds idea crossed my mind. Could it be? I took my necklace off and placed it were the key should be. I turned it slowly and a blinding blue light broke through the darkness of the night. In the box, lay a single bloody knife and before I could let out a shriek, a shadow came running in and all I could remember was searing pain emerging from the back of my head.
