AdamsChapter 38- I Got Bored Burning Dead People
Everyone has left the Council Room. I stayed seated at the head of the table. How did things get this complicated this fast?
I recalled how Lexus told me to marry Jacoby then stormed out of the room. He knew that if I didn't make this deal, my life would be on the line, and right there on that line would be the whole Kingdom next to me.
I asked Jacoby for 24 hours to give an answer, but I'm hell certain 24 hours won't be enough for me. By now, the candles in the room were burnt out, much like ability to comprehend anything past this point. "How did I even get here?" I sighed to myself.
"I carried you over here from the mortal world." Lexus' voice intervened. "Hey." I turned to him. "Hey." He replied back. "Listen Thana, you have to do this. You have to get married to Jacoby to save yourself and this pain in the ass we call a Kingdom." He sat down next to me.
"You can't tell me you want me all to yourself one day and then tell me to get married to another man in the other. This isn't normal." I stated as a matter-of-factly. "Normal? Look around you, Thana. What's normal about anything in this place? You're Lucifer's daughter for crying out loud!" He blurted.
I averted my eyes to my lap and lowered my head in the process.
Lexus reached out and raised my chin gently so that I met his gaze. "I may have said all those things out of jealousy, but now I'm saying this because I'm rational. We can't be together, Thana, and you have huge problems to deal with and I can't be one of them. After you marry him, I'll be leaving for hell. You won't see me here unless it's necessary." He explained and my eyes started tearing up.
I hadn't realized I'd be losing him so soon. I only started realizing my feelings towards him. This can't be happening. "Lexus, I- I feel things towards you. I can't call it love, but they're intense emotions like- ugh forget it. I suck at explaining my feelings." I whispered as a tear slid across my cheek.
"Love is an emotion I've never felt before, I can't identify it, and I don't know how to feel anything but hate. Though, I do know that you're like this enigmatic addictive little vixen. I can't live a day without breathing your scent in. I'd die." He held my hands and kissed them softly. "Never in a million years have I thought I'd turn soft." He stated in fake disgust, I chuckled. "Oh oh, I made Hell's bad-boy soft." I teased through tears.
Lexus wiped my tears gently with his thumb. "Don't cry over me. I'm not worth it. I'm just the greedy bastard who'd never know how to love and has never been or will be loved." He laughed bitterly. "Lexus, you never told me your life story." I straightened my posture.
"It's a pretty depressing one." His words were laced with nonchalance. "This is a pretty depressing occasion." I responded, sniffling. "Fine, let's go sit on the couch. Cause this is a long one."
I walked to the couch and plopped down on it. Lexus mirrored my action. He then patted on his lap. "Put your head over here." He told me and I giggled. "Your wish is my command." I answered.
Lexus started stroking my hair. "You smell like apples." He stated. "Stop complementing my scent and spill the tea, lover boy." I retorted and
"Spill the tea? What you mortals say is beyond me." He raised his hands in surrender, then went back to stroking my hair. Mm, this is nice.
"Stop changing the subject!"
And just as he opened his mouth to speak, a knock sounded through the Council Room. "Dammit! I never get to hear the story." I straightened up. "It's fate, I guess." Lexus responded.
"Come in." I ordered. "Your Highness, his majesty requests your attendance in his study." The guard uttered. "His majesty? Lucifer came back?" I queried rhetorically.
I stood up and headed towards the study. "Are you coming?" I asked Lexus. "I think I'll just stay here. I have lots to think about." He told me.
"Who asked your hand in marriage?" I snickered and left Lexus chuckling. I wish I could hear his chuckle forever and know he's mine, but life is nothing but a despondency machine.*
"Why'd you come back?" I entered Lucifer's study. "I got bored burning dead people." He lazily stated while going over some document. "But, the better question is. When's the wedding, daughter dearest?" He spat sardonically.
"I haven't said yes yet, Lucifer." I rolled my eyes. "Yet? Were you even planning on doing that?" He stared at me, rage devouring his whole features.
"Oh please, do I even have a choice? He's stronger than us. He can wipe this whole Kingdom out in milliseconds if he willed so."
Lucifer almost jumped out of his seat. "How foolish are you? Mark my words this wedding won't happen unless he gets himself a crown matrimonial and screws us all over." Lucifer stated.
"Crown matrimonial?" I questioned. Lucifer flared his nose wrathfully. "Make no mistake this Kingdom is like any other, therefore the same rules that apply in the mortal world, apply here. A crown matrimonial grants your partner equal rights to run the Kingdom as you, he won't be a consort, he'll be "rightfully" King; but that's not all. In the unlikely event that you die, the regency will transfer to him, irrespective of the fact that you might have heirs." Lucifer explained.
"But if I grant him a crown matrimonial, he'd kill me within seconds and take the crown for himself..." I finally understood the game.
"That's how he's going to get what he wants. He scared me into this marriage and these incidents granted him a top hand in all possible scenarios." I held my head in my palms.
"This is bad... Real bad." I added.
"He still hasn't asked for a crown matrimonial, but I have a feeling he will as soon as you accept his proposal. Maybe even sooner." Lucifer added.
Then a question popped into my mind. "Wait a minute, why would my death be 'unlikely'?"
"I suppose I do owe you an explanation." Lucifer swiveled in his chair like an evil villain. Well, he is the source of all evil. I guess he has the right to.
"After I see you're fit to be my immediate successor- and I think that'll be very soon- you will drink an elixir that turns you immortal, and you will be reigning in the in-between, whereas I will be in Hell, running the burning business." Lucifer told me. Wait, wait. Immortal?
"Immortal?!" I cried out. "This means I won't ever die. I want to die one day. I don't want to lead a long, miserable, endless life. This isn't fair! I never asked for any of this." I bellowed.
"Life is never fair. Now prep yourself for tomorrow. You're having breakfast with Jacoby and I'm certain some drama will unfold." Lucifer stated.
" 'You're having' ? Won't you be joining?" I asked."No." Was all he said before he snapped his fingers and disappeared into thin air.
Leave it to Lucifer to abandon me in an exceptionally sticky situation like this.
I believe this breakfast could use some guests, though.
"Guards! Bring me the Royal Bird Envoy!"
I grabbed papers from Lucifer's desk and wrote in cursive:
" Her royal highness, Princess Thana Dea, cordially invites you to a formal breakfast at the Royal Castle.
You are expected to arrive at 8 a.m sharp."
"Send these to the leaders of the creatures."
