Chapter 16 – The Loyal Servant

I have always heard stories of princesses being saved by princes, then marrying their knight in shining armor. It always seems that a man is the missing variable in the equation that is a woman's life. We are told we must marry a man to protect us and provide us with our basic necessities. We are told that we must comply to our spouse's needs simply because they are superior in the relationship, yet we are never told that we must learn to protect ourselves, or taught how to survive like a lone-wolf. Our world views women as fragile entities that must be protected and tended to, but we are much more than that.

The ignorance of political leaders and historians prevented them from telling truths. That women, in all honesty, are the ones who led the political games, coups, and ruled kingdoms under-handedly. Women like Catherine De Medici, Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots...These women built kingdoms just because they knew how to play their cards wisely. Almost every man in 16th Century Europe involved in religion or politics hated the idea of a female monarch or females in power, yet, after centuries, we find that these women influenced almost all decisions made by the "kings", "noblemen" or "privy councils".

In a couple of years, I'll be Queen of Hell, but I will make sure that even the humans know my name. As the ruler of hell, who did good. Who was good. Who obeyed god thoroughly.

I scoffed. "The Humans". A month back, I used to be one of them. Heck, a week back I didn't know anything. I was confined to the small town that filled with chatter and gossip. They were right though. I wasn't normal, I was an abomination. I am the daughter of a monster... However, my mother was as pure as they get. Or so I've heard. I stared at my pillow with disappointment. What am I really? How can I be good and bad? How can I be equal good and bad when I've never done anything to hurt anyone. I never even hurt Jayden. The person who taunted me for years.

My mind raced back to when he told me I should call him when I started running hell. How fucking ironic. Well I guess in a couple of years, he'll receive a nice and sweet phone call, alright. I was contemplating the way to torture him when a sudden realization hit me. I sound like Lucifer...Look at me, what the fuck am I thinking. I'm already starting to be like him. I sighed to myself, standing up. I headed towards the window and opened it, letting a gust of wind hit me. Toxic thoughts clouded my mind as I stared at the trees. Suddenly, the demonic bird from last time came flying in. In its possession, a single rolled paper. The fiery colored bird inched closer, offering me the letter. I snatched the paper hastily before the bird burst into flames and just as the letter came to be in my tenure, it did.

I shakily opened the letter to be met with cursive handwriting, I was sure it wasnt Lucifers because it was slightly different.

Dear Thana,

Not everything around you is as it seems. I bring you dismaying news, although it is troubling, I ask you not to panic. The couple that were to adopt you are daemons. You may not know what they are and this letter musnt contain such vital information, so I urge you to open a book under the name Of Heaven and Hell and read the chapter upon Daemons. The book may require supernatural interference to show you its contents.

Best Of Luck,

Your Loyal Servant.

I was now standing among thousands of piles of books. I didnt know where to begin. I felt some sort of pull towards one specific shelf of books as one particular book stood out to me. In my opinion it was one of the thickest books I had ever seen. I reached out to retrieve it, but I couldnt reach it. I took out an old wooden chair and stood on it. My delicate fingers brushed the spine of the book. At that moment, the air dispelled, not a single breeze of wind swept through the ancient wooden shelves. The spectacular crystals dangling from the chandeliers clanged against each other, desperately asking me not to claim the book with my hands. I ignored their tenacious calls that pleaded me not to take it.

I held the fragile, leathered book shone disturbingly under the dim light. I softly tried to open the book, the key word being try considering it was literally sealed shut. The thing that bugged me most is that nothing was visibly sealing it shut. I tried once more, but no avail. "That's not how you open it." A voice whispered in my ear. "Maeva! What the hell?!" I shrieked. She smiled at me with a mischievous gleam sparked in her purple eyes. "Thana, you must understand that this isn't a normal place. Do you really expect this to be a normal book?" she retorted. Silence fell upon us, and I just stared at the leathered book before me. Never have I imagined to be in a place as so, with the father of all evil as my father. A chill crawled up my spine. "You cant open it, can you?" I stated. On Maeva's lips, a dissimilar expression lay. A mix of contentment and fear, an assortment of hollow yet elated feeling radiated off her. Confusion, I identified. "What clouds your mind with bliss and confusion simultaneously?" I inquired. "Nothing but the fear that something greater is to come and that greater entity, is closer to you than you distinguish."
