"Are you sure this is the way out?" Calum pressed, glancing back behind him, glowing eyes studying the patch black emptiness of the tunnel. We had escaped through the back door of the morgue, only making it within seconds as the entrance was pushed open. Leaving before they could notice Calum's absence, we didn't linger to listen in on their conversation which regarded their next movements. Instead, we steadily pushed through the empty hall, Calum's hands guiding me in front of him despite how weak and easily malleable he was at the moment. Even in times where he was his weakest, my safety still his priority and it made me fall even more in love with him.
It was a quick trek down the abandoned hall, before we entered another room which led us straight to the exit. The escape was almost too easy, it made me wonder where everyone was and why they hadn't started searching for both Calum and I. Perhaps the universe was on our side for once in our lives, and was giving us the shot of freedom which we so heavily deserved.
"Positive. Down the tunnel, second left, through the trap door and up the ladder. Trust me, I know this place like the back of my hand." Michael sighed in response, checking behind his shoulder once more.
"Then what? We just meander back home?" Calum asked, sarcasm evident in his tone. I gently squeezed his hand, reminding him not to get too worked up. He was clearly exhausted, famished and all over the shop from only just literally rising from the dead. I didn't blame him for being so antsy and weary in this moment of time.
"You really think I'd plan all of this without another escape route?" Michael chuckled to himself, shaking his head almost out of pity. "You know Ashton and Luke? They're up there with a getaway car, there's a refuge only a couple hundred kilometres away. Decked out with food, beds and all that, we'll stay there until we know Felix is out of this sector of Woodlends. Make tracks onto the next place where we can figure out how the fuck to control that goddamn psychopath."
I felt comfort begin to settle in, my taut shoulders relaxing as he spoke the words. I expected to be shoved out into the woods, left to our own devices. I expected to have no where safe to go and to basically scavenge for food and shelter where we'd make camp and live anxiously for weeks. But this was much better- somewhere protected with food and beds, where I could work towards getting Calum healthier and able.
"Is there many people there?" He asked from beside me, holding onto me even tighter as I gained back behind me. As far as I could see, it was just pure darkness, swallowing us all. It was broken by the ray of light shining from Michael's torch, illuminating a path for us all to follow, leading us to our safety.
"Dunno yet. Depends how many have escaped alive." He sighed, glancing back to look at us. "I've helped at least ten get out of here, but I couldn't take it any more. It was only a matter of time before Felix turned around and snapped at me, he's been close to killing me so many times."
"Why..?" I asked, curling myself towards Calum's hold, secretly revelling in the feeling of being this close to him again.
"Because he's a psychopath. Literally insane, he gets off on others suffering. He's only doing this to make history in some lousy book about vampires that no one would ever read, anyway." He scoffed, wrapping his arms around himself, holding the torch in front of us.
